EPO 60x CD-ROM

How fast is too fast?

EPO 60x CD-ROM

Postby Ian on Thu Jan 01, 1970 2:58 am

I tried getting EPO to send one of these to me for a review, but they won't sell them here in the US. I guess there was too much disc breakage or something due to the high rotation speeds.

Here it is for sale in Japan:

Postby PARACAPS on Thu Jan 01, 1970 4:38 am

Quite some time ago, I managed to test out a 68x Star Data CD-ROM drives, at the computer store I use to work at. They preformed extremely poorly, and had a lot of trouble reading certain Cdr's and were very loud. Since we stocked them for quite some time due to the fact that the pricing were cheaper then most CD-ROM drives, we started to receive many faulty ones coming back with unhappy customers which wasn’t much of a surprise.

I usually try to avoid generic branded high speed CD-ROM drives but you never really know until you try them. I once saw a retail package claiming that it reaches speeds to a 100x. with a 100x stamped on the front of the drive. I wander how well they did, since I never saw it being sold since that sighting at the swap meet (computer market)

Star Data

Postby MdMa on Thu Jan 01, 1970 4:38 am

Paracaps is absolutley right. I actually own a Star Data 68x cd-rom
and its biggest peice of shit rom i have even bought. I have had so many problems ranging from missing files while trying to install MS Office
to not being able to read perfectly normal cds at all.
In my expirience I would defiently not recommend generic brand cd-rom drives. I have heard so much shit like all the roms are made in the same factory and just branded different. I don't give a fuck. Go for the quality brands.... you pay for what you get. As my good mate paracaps would know its all about quality.... not quantity

Cheers
