Postby Zer0Fade on Sat Apr 19, 2003 8:45 pm

Every site I have gon to says in there discription LTD-166S or 165. Where is a place where I can get a guarenteed 166S and not a 165.

Thanks.

The retail version says either, but the OEM lists just the 166S. You still might want to call to confirm.

You're welcome. Hopefully it works out. That is where I bought my 166S, and I didn't have any problems.

I bought mine at Best Buy for 69 bucks. It was in a Buslink dv-16 box which was the exact same model my 163 was when I got it a year ago.
Seems they have just continued to upgrade to the latest drive without changing the box at all.
I double checked by shaking the box, the 166s is shorter so it rattled around in the box, it was packed OK though, box is too big now ;)

Yes, but the 165H is shorter as well, so you can't use that test to distinguish between it and the 166S.

Very true but I've never had a problem taking anything back to BB and I got that drive quite a few months ago now so I'd think they should all be 166s drives by now if they're still using the LiteOn drive. Take it out to the parking lot and open it, that's what I did :)

Hi Zer0Fade, did you buy the retail version? I want the 166S and would prefer the retail boxed version (because of the PowerDVD software), but am worried I could end up with the 165H if I buy the retail version, because the retail version is listed as offering either model. Can anyone who bought the retail version tell me which version they got and where they bought it from?

Troubles with NewEgg!

Postby Para on Wed May 21, 2003 1:21 pm

I ordered a 166S from NewEgg, and all 3 times I have gotten a 166S from them! I'm done with NewEgg...their prices are great, but I have already bought another DVD ROM with all the shipping back and forth between home and CA.

I'm very upset about this. I'm going to call CS and tell them that their website is misleading. My invoice clearly states 166S, and yet I keep getting a 165H...

I really don't care if they're "similiar." Reality is that they're not the same and NewEgg keeps sending me something different. Makes me extremely angry that I called specifically last time and talked to the guy and he assured me it was just a small mistake.

Of course, now when I go to the website is says 166S/165H. I guess they're learning to cover their butts.

I'm about to head to Walmart to see if I can find a 166S as someone else posted... Other than that, I'm done buying from NewEgg. :x

I was the poster who saw the 166S (or 165H) at Walmart. The problem with the retail kit is that it doesn't say on the box what model (166S or 165H) the drive is. So when you order the drive at Newegg, they fill the order with whatever retail box they feel like you giving you. I presume because of the May 2003 manufacture date of all of this Walmart store's stock (the manufacture date and serial number is on the outside of the box) that the drives are 166S drives, but I don't know that for sure. Do you remember what date your 165H drives were made? If I knew for sure that Liteon no longer makes the 165H, I could be *sure* that the May 2003 stock is 166S stock. Since I don't like to open retail boxes that I don't intend to buy, I didn't open the box and look at the sticker on the top of one of the Walmart May 2003 drives. It looks like you could easily open the box and sneak a peak at the top of the drive where the model number is located without disturbing the box's contents and without creating a scene in the store. If you get a 165H from Walmart, returning it is easy! I had the same dilemma as you with Newegg (before seeing the drive at Walmart), and I got a 166S by buying the OEM version at Newegg, which is what I recommend if you cannot find the drive at Walmart. You may wish to try multiple Walmart locations in your area if you are unsuccessful--the Walmart I saw the drive at is located on Ordinance Road in Glen Burnie, MD, USA.

Para: one other thing: if your local Walmart(s) has the Liteon retail 166S (or 165H) drive, it will be located in the electronics department in the aisle(s) where the computer peripherials (i.e. video cards, modems, sound cards, CD-RW drives, etc.) are located. Keep in mind that the version I found is the black bezel version, so you may not find the beige version at the Walmart stores you check, if you find any Liteon DVD-ROM drives there at all.
