Nero ShowTime = CyberLink PowerDVD?

Postby cfitz on Tue Jul 29, 2003 9:34 pm

Is it just me, or does Nero ShowTime seem an awful lot like a re-skinned version of CyberLink's PowerDVD player? Did Ahead announce that they had licensed a player from CyberLink and I just missed it?

Not that this is all bad, mind you. Presumably CyberLink has a lot more experience writing DVD player software than Ahead. But it did surprise me.

Not sure if we should be offended or pleased with the comparison.

Nero ShowTime was developed in house, as with all our other products.

We find it's better to develop programs, instead of purchasing them and then redeveloping them.

I don't think you should be offended. :) As I said, it wouldn't have been bad had you decided to license CyberLink's product. I think they make a fine product as well. And there is nothing wrong with buying outside technology for areas outside of one's core competency. Even if your goal is to move into a new area and make it part of your core competency, it wouldn't be bad to buy a little head start.

But seeing as how this is actually a first release of a home-grown produt, then I think a little "well done" is in order. I've been pretty pleased with it, and haven't found any problems (particularly impressive in comparison to some of the other components in Nero 6 Ultra Edition that are not first generation products but somehow managed to sprout new bugs in the transition to 6). Could you please convey my "congrats" to the developers of Showtime?

The similarity I saw was probably due to the fact that all DVD/media players have to perform the same basic tasks. I guess form does follow function. Maybe if I have time later I will, just for fun, post some screen shots showing some of the similarities that made me think it might by PowerDVD under the skin.

Can showtime co-exist with PowerDVD on XP?

It can on 2000, by my own experience. I don't know why the same wouldn't apply to XP.
