Backing up CD-ROM

Postby kaikow on Sun Aug 10, 2003 5:20 pm

Since Microsoft no longer sells replacement media for some products, what's the best software for copying the original CDs so they can be used as backup?

Is Nero/InCD adequate?

If not what is recommended?

I do not care about copying video, sound or games, just software CDs.

Nero works OK for me in this role, but I'm not have some of the problems with version 6 that you have reported here (except for the file date problem in InCD 4.X

The only problems I've encountered are:

1. The InCD date problem, but that is InCD prooblem, tho it might impact Nero 6, I don't know. I thought that I saw somebody else state that Nero 6 was also copying dates incorrectly. Actually, that's good, because it might indicate common code is being used, so they can test and fix it in one place.

2. multi mounter not working, whether or not drive image is enabled.

Due to the InCD problem, I have not been using Nero 6, so I dunno if I would find any other problems.

The date problem is prima facie evidence that Ahead software is not adequately tested.

Heck, one does not even have to design a test for the date problem, just keep one's eyes open when dragging a file. I sure hope that they tested dragging a file!

Also, such a problem has NO drive dependencies, so there's just no excuse for a fix not having been quickly released.

Although the multimounter code might have drive dependencies, it is at a level of imlementation that needs to be checked out before doing other code. Heck, I'm using two widely used Plextor drives, using an Adaptec 2940UW for the SCSI CD-ROM and the Win 2000 built-in support for the ATAPI CD-RW. Makes one wonder just what is their test bed and methodology.
