LiteOn 166 died at a year old, typical?

Well my Buslink/Liteon 166s died last night :( It was just barely short of a year old and had been opening and closing the tray slower and slower lately, now it just makes the wooshing noise a bunch of times then just quits. Maybe the spindle moter died or something. My old 163 that is now over 2 years old still works so I plunked it back in till I get a replacement.
Is this typical or am I just lucky? I'll probably just get another one locally as I can get them very cheap now so it's not a huge thing. I already opened it in case it just needed a good cleaning and it looks almost perfect inside, just doesn't work anymore.
Sept 2002 manufacturing date.
