List of troublesome devices??

I was wondering whether I may have stumbled upon a list of troublesome devices that need to be somehow special cased by software.

I found a list of what may be troublesome devices in the following key in the Win 2000 registry.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Redbook\SpecialTargetList]

I wonder if each of those devices has to be treated in a special way by software to account for some non-standard implementation by the device?

What is the purpose of that registry key?

If so, this might be the reason why, say, EWR version 3.3.2.0 works with some drives, but EWR 4.* does not. Ditto for InCD.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the red book is for audio CDs and EWR does not process audio CDs of any knid. ;)

Yes, it is for audio, but the listed devices likely have other issues too.

For example, the Plextor SCSI CD-ROM drive counts tracks and MSF numbers as, are you ready for this?

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 16, 17, ...
instead of

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, ...

There's a beta version of ISOBuster that works around that particular problem. I'm not sure that version has yet been released.

This could very well be the reason that Multimounter does not display the Volumes tab for that drive.

And, it coud affect EWR, if EWR 4 is using a different set of code to read the drive than was used by pre-EWR 4.

Such problems are not unlike problems that were included in early implementations of the ISO 9660 standard and the High Sierra proposal.

Well, I do not know a single device which firmware is bug free. I fear there is no possibility to create a list of "generaly" troublesome devices.
