So far I don't trust Nero CD/DVD Speed for testing DVD quality. I tested a REALLY poor quality DVD-R with it, and it came out all green, and this disc will not even play more then halfway through on most drives! so I think there is still some work needed to be done on the software!

I don't know what you're talking about.... what about Nero. Nobody EVER has to patch or update Nero, it's *always* 100% perfect and functional all the time!

Platinum CD-RW 4x - 12x OK on LTR-52327S (QS09)

Postby XIII on Tue Oct 07, 2003 4:16 pm

Positive result on Platinum CD-RW for LTR-52327S (QS09):

Code: Select all
........................Platinum CD-RW/CMC 80min 4x - 12x.......12x

Unfortunately I am not able to get positive results on Nashua/PD on 12x and I don't want to test at slower speeds.

Furthermore, I have some 4x CD-RW's but I don't think it's worth testing them on a LTR-52327S (too slow to ever use again:-)

Still waiting for those 32x Verbatim/MC discs...

ok, I got some Imation from Argos today for £14, 50 pack spindle as I was in desperate need for a few cdrs. Not used these on my liteon 52/32/52 before so ran a few tests.

Kprobe reports:

Code: Select all
Disc Type = CDR (A-)
Manufacturer = Moser Baer India Limited

<< Disc Information >>
Erasable = False
Status of Last Session/Border = Empty Session/Border
Disc Status = Empty Disc

First Track/RZone Number in Last Session/Border(LSB) = 1
Last Track/RZone Number in Last Session/Border(LSB) = 1
Disc Identification Valid(DID_V) = False
Disc Bar Code Valid(DBC_V) = False
Unrestricted Use Disc(DRU) = False
Disc Type = Undefined

Disc Bar Code = 0000000000000000h
Number of OPC Table Entries = 0

<< Track Information >>
Number of Complete Sessions on Disc = 0

They are 700MB ones rated on the tub as 48x, SMARTBURN picks them up as 52x in NERO 6.0.0.19 and Alcohol 120% v1.4.7.1005 as well as CloneCD 4.2.0.2.

I did a normal burn of 702MB worth of mp3's in nero at 52x, burned fine.

K Probe report:

Also, I did an overburn of 706MB of same mp3 files and some more in nero at 52x, burned fine, kprobe report

no c2 errors at all and c1 errors at 702MB 52x was very minimum, so I can safely say these are some good media, for moderate overburning too but im no c1/c2 expert so if anyone else wants to comment as well feel free :)

Philips 52x OK on LiteOn LTR-52327S (QS09)

Postby XIII on Thu Oct 09, 2003 4:12 pm

Philips 52x OK on LiteOn LTR-52327S (QS09):

Code: Select all
........................Philips/RTK 80min 52X...................52X

These are the discs in regular cases "Made in China" (as can be read on the back), labeled CDR80DD52H/100 9082 100 02054.

I have also seen some 52x Philips discs in slimline cases "Made in Germany" and am really wondering what manufacturer might have made those. Should have bought some...

Anyone?

Errors on Nashua/PD CD-RW

Postby XIII on Thu Oct 09, 2003 4:40 pm

These are the results of the Dutch jury:

Code: Select all
Good........55.42%
Damaged.....19.48%
Unreadable..25.10%

Never knew they were that bad.

I have used them a little while for making backup's... I am just not sure whether this was with my current LiteOn LTR-52327S or with my old Plextor 2410.

mrk1283: Just stay away from C2 errors, that's all. An extremely high amount of C1 errors is also never good, but the results of your scans look A-OK.

XIII: Yuck! Those Nashua discs *are* nasty! I'll be sure to stay away from them. Thank you, by the way, for the new Philips results. :)

cool :p I could always burn them at 48x rated (only 4 secs difference) and get almost no c1 errors at all I guess, best way really

Verbatim DataLife 40x Promopack (CMC)

Postby MediumRare on Fri Oct 10, 2003 4:50 pm

I think I've finally figured out what was going on with these discs. They're all used now, and I definitely won't buy them again- so this is mostly a warning regarding varying quality.

It looks like there were 2 different lots in the 10-pack I bought and this results in the wildly differing error counts encountered. The serial numbers printed near the centre are all very similar and look like this:
Code: Select all
E105L A 2 0301261132-667796
E105L B 3 0301261153-668155

The 4 disks with an "A" at pos. 6 were good- independent of the burn speed (nos. 2, 4, 7 and 9 see previous post). The "B"-disks all show a massive increase in error rate at ca. 44 minutes- again independent of the burn speed. This also shows up as damaged sectors in CD Speed. The scans shown in verbatim cdr/rw vary in quality are actually typical for the "A" and "B" lots and it was pure coincidence that the bad lot was burned at 48x at that time !!

So the final verdict is:
- "A" lot >= 40x
- "B" lot < 24x, probably damaged at any speed.

Since these came in the same package and there's no way of knowing how the next lot turns out, I can only reiterate: avoid them!

New Fuji Discs 100-pk At Best Buy

Postby DeathStalker77 on Tue Oct 14, 2003 9:29 pm

Ok, while the previous 50-pk and 100-pk (double stack of 50-pk) Fuji discs were wonderful TY discs (the ones in the spindle pack with the screw-on top previously pictured), the "new" 100-pk single spindles are Prodisc

From CDR Media Code Identifier v1.63
ATIP: 97m 32s 19f
Disc Manufacturer: Prodisc Technology Inc.
Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 72f / LBA: 359847)

Why do I have the feeling that I'm NOT going to like these? =(

I honestly don't think Prodiscs are that bad. I have no problems with them whatsoever. No doubt their quality is not as good as TY, and that is why I think Prodisc has received a bad name. People correlate (or used to correlate) Fuji with TY quality; now that Fuji is using slightly less quality media, people think Fuji, and thus Prodisc, sucks. Fuji is not as good as it used to be with TY, but it's still not bad with Prodisc.

Fuji Discs

Postby DeathStalker77 on Mon Oct 20, 2003 1:32 pm

I don't know - the new Prodiscs are physically thinner than the TYs, and less opaque. I've tried contacting Fuji regarding them, and so far 90% of the people I've spoke with don't userstand the issue. I keep getting the "Fuji stands by its product and our 100% guarantee" line. I'm even getting a run-around from the Product Manager, Jamie Cito! (Who says it's "not his area to comment on")

I've gotten an ok from a Customer Service Manager (I won't mention her name as I don't want her to be deluged with similar requests, just out of courtesy) to get the 50pks from Best Buy (Best Buy said they'd price match the 100pk pre-rebate price), and then she's authorize a refund equal to the rebates - so at least I have one issue addressed.

I should think that the companies using High Quality manufacturers (like TY or Ritek), would want to advertize that aspect on their packaging.

While there have been a few positive comments here on the quality of Prodisc, the majority (here, as well as elsewhere), have been quite negative.

I tend to liken this to a Lexus dealer selling a Yugo - and saying we give you the same guarantee on it - but charging you the Lexus price. It MAY have the same guarantee, but it's STILL a Yugo.

Maybe a few thousand extra C1 error don't make a "real world" difference, but if I don't have to have them, I don't want them - and, more to the point, I don't want to have to pay the same price as discs that DON'T have the extra errors.

I'm still going to pursue the manufacturing issue with Fuji, so I'll post an update on my progress and any response(s).

I understand your gripe, DeathStalker, although Prodiscs should not be compared to Yugos. There are other CD-R manufacturers that I would compare to Yugo. :P

MAM/MS 40x or 52x?

Postby XIII on Thu Oct 23, 2003 3:35 pm

LiteOn LTR52327S (QS09):

Code: Select all
........................MAM/MS 80min 48X........................52X

However, using real speed display of Nero I discovered it only went up to 40x instead of 52x (at the end of the disc) while Nero speed was set to 52x (and disc was identified as 52x by SmartBurn 3.1.5).

Nero CD Speed 100% OK, no C2 errors, max a few C1.

Strange...
