My current Win2K/XP setup:

http://www.geocities.com/kevinford2003/shot.jpg

I'd have Lycoris running too, but with only 512MG of RAM, I can't do it...plus Lycoris and VMWare don't work to well together. Oh well...

what's that in the picture?
a Win2K window and a WinXP window in VMWare under Linux running?

VMWare running XP under Windows 2000. Mandrake is installed in a dual-boot setup. Lycoris is under VMWare, but doesn't work too well (the fonts are garbled)...

VMWare is nice for testing out different OS's...tried Windows 2003 Server for a bit (Microsoft has a 180-day trail version). Nice, but very, very anal about security...you have to give it a reason to shut the system down. NOT a home OS...

Oh, and guess what boots faster: Windows 2000 or Windows XP under VMWare? I'll give you a clue: it's not my real os :o

your'e running VMWare in Win2K, and in VMWare you're running XP???
strange, i thought it was only for inter-OS: run Linux in Win/run Win in Linux.
it had never occured to me to run Win in Win using VMWare!

my guess is that winXP boots faster.
is there some catch here?

Thanks CignaXI, I'll try them...

And yeah, XP boots faster...go figure.
It has it's advantages; for example, the old DOS game Duke Nukem 3D is very choppy under Win2K (seems to be a keyboard input issue with Win2K+DOS programs), but running Win98 w/VMWare and running Duke under 98 it plays great.

I selected WinXP, but I'm using
Win95 (2 PCs, not used much)
Win98 (first edition, 2 PCs)
WinXP (two PCs)
Mandrake Linux 9.1 dual-booting on one of the XP PCs (need to re-install due to HDD re-partitioning)

XP Pro on both my PCs.
It is truly an extemely stable OS, despite the fact that it is
feature-packed.

People may love to hate Gates or MS, but they put out very good software (I like the fact that they all share very similar interfaces - I have seen some software by other companies that is clearly designed by developers who clearly weren't coordinated in their design of various screens and menu buttons etc. within the SAME app), including their OS.

I hate M$, not Gates though. Word crashed when I was prining a paper that I hadn't saved yet, had to start from scratch again.

I had that happen with MS publisher once. Overall, I like MS software, though (the consistent interface is a big advantage).

Save early, save often. :) BTW, I thought Word auto-saves every so often? It does for me.

Yes, there is an option to autosave every X minutes.
It is enabled by default (set to 10 minutes).

Microsoft Windows XP Professional on most P4 desktops

Microsoft Windows XP Home on three Tualatin/P4 notebooks

Microsoft Windows 2003 on one P4 notebook

Linux Redhat 9 on two P-III servers

I tried Longhorn several times but had not much fun with its various beta versions.
