modded my liteons black!

Ohh yeah!

huge jpeg here

Previously on other drives I've used Halfrods own sprays, Plastikote and Hammerite, none of thes egave me a nice enough texture that looked and felt like a factory finish, but this time i chose Holts autospray from work as it had the special acrylic mixture, the black I used gave a very fine finish, smooth to the touch and unlike the others it did not leave a "splodge" if you accidently overspray one particular area, just let it settle for 30 mins in open air outdoors and it soaks in and sets with a clean finish.

there was NO preparation done beforehand apart form removing the fascias, the Holts Acrylic based spraypaint is very plastic friendly, the acrylic mixture helps this, a thin fine even layer on each coat helps the overall finish too. I could have used a primer but I've never really been fond of them on finished plastics like fascias. I used 3 coats, the first two drying for ten mins then the 3rd a quick spray with a thin film, dont worry if it looks like its all blotted or specked during this phase, it WILL settle to a fine finish, this is if you use holts acrylic based paint!

all in all I'd say about an hour for the whole thing to be done :p another hour to let it dry

Also here's how it looks after a complete few hours and in detail the....detail

some slight grain from jpeg compression must be excused!

Thanks for viewing :P

any diy store should stock it or any car store yes, I'm dead proud of this liteon dvd drive though, the 165H, virtually silent when watching dvd's and very fast, it does make a slight grinding noise at spin up and spin down, this sound slike the bearings as you can hear them move around the track when you handle the dirve, this is normal i guess as it function 5 star!, a brilliant upgrade from my old pioneer 106/s

yeah, i saw in the pic that it's acrylic.
what i had meant was, is this just plain acrylic spray paint (available in any DIY shop) or some special kind?

Hey nice job with the paint. Looks very clean. :) I guess you could put logos back on with a homemade stencil and paint, but that sounds like a real pain. Good job anyways. I'll keep that type of paint in mind. Thanks for the tip.

Looks good, but wouldn't it just be easier to buy a black drive.

That's too easy, when I do something I want to "do" it not take the shortcut, I want people to recognise "Yes, he spent time and effort doing that and the end result shows this" - it's about self awareness and experience of what you can and can't do.

It's like saying why take vocal lessons when you can mime! only the hardcore will tell the difference whereas average Joe will not tell the difference and I don't prefer that I'm afraid
