I used nero 5 to rease a used CDRW then used InCD to format it.
All of the choices of format were grayed out, e.g. Quick Format, etc...
Why is this?

There are two types of "quick format":

1. CD-MRW (Mt. Rainier). Your 40x Plextor does not support Mt. Rainier.

2. Reformatting a formatted CD-RW without first erasing it using the "Normal Format" mode. The data on the CD-RW is not removed, but only the information structure as to where it is located. This is similar in effect to deleting the files. The disc appears to be blank and during a writing operation previously written but unaccessible files are overwritten with the new files.

If you are starting a packet writing format with a blank (erased) CD-RW disc, Normal Format is not available because there is no underlying structure remaining from a previous format. It is necessary to do a Complete Format, which is the only format possible.

That's why the formatting choices are greyed out when a blank disc is formatted. ;)

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.
The 40x Plextor is supposed to be Mt.Rainer compatible soon with a firmware update from Plextor. It was made with that possibility in mind for a later upgrade. I hope they issue it soon. In the meantime, Nero5/InCD is giving me other problems. Arrgghhh!
