My Toshiba 1712 is really loud. I am wondering if anyone else is having a noise problem with this drive. I bought it because I read it was so quiet, it's not at all.

Anyone have recommendations for good quiet drives you can't hear during movie playback?

What software are you using to play your DVD's?

You might want to try running Nero Drive Speed to limit the maximum speed at which your drive spins while playing back DVD's.

As for alternative drives, I only have experience with the JLMS (LiteOn) 166S. It has a fairly deserved reputation for being somewhat loud while reading data discs at full speed, but it is very quiet while playing back DVD movies because it reduces its rotational speed for movies.

What is WinDVD?

I have no software with my player, maybe that is the problem? I bought an OEM Drive.

WinDVD is DVD movie player software. PowerDVD is another example.

How are you viewing your movies if you don't have any player software?

I've only used it for CD playback, and it's really loud. I figured it would be the same for playing DVD's, but maybe I am wrong since it reads them at a different speed.

Then I guess the next question is: What are you using for CD audio playback? As you are well aware, quiet operation during CD audio playback is important as well.

Have you tried the Nero Drive Speed option to slow the drive during CD audio playback?

I guess Empty17 is watching AVI movies directly from CDs. I prefer to copy them to hard drive to eliminate the spinning noise...

Regarding Audio CD playback - all you have to do is to disable Digital CD Audio for Toshiba. This will limit playback speed to 4x where the drive is absolutely quiet.

I've been switching between my Asus 52x and Toshiba 16x DVD for Cds and installing software. The Asus was very quiet at first, but has turned loud. The Toshiba was loud from the beginning. I have not installed a CD-RW yet.

Cds aren't as bad because you can turn the music up. Movies need more silence in my opinion. Especially since there is dialogue, sometimes totally quiet scenes, etc...
