the imporant thing about the dvd rom is..

Best Quality as possible

If the Lite-On is easier for you to get, then I recommend getting it. Either the LTD-163, LTD-165, or LTD-166 will suit you just fine. You could order the Toshiba online, some vendors ship internationally, but it's probably easier (and cheaper) for you to purchase a Lite-On in Sweden.

Compare prices at http://www.pricewatch.com and look under the Dealer/Other Info column to see if a vendor ships worldwide. Be sure to check a dealer's rating at http://www.resellerratings.com before ordering.

Is the SD-M1712 better than the LTD-166? Well, you'll hear supporters on either side. :) When it boils down to it, I don't think you'll be disappointed with either drive. Both are high quality.

I prefer Lite-On DVD-ROM drives but that is just me. I find them to be nice and fast, especially when it comes down to ripping a DVD. The Lite-On DVD-ROM drives are really great stuff. Highly recomended.

I'm not sure where the best prices are, but I am running off of a LTD-163D and I find it to be great. Other models are the LTD-163, LTD-165H, and LTD-166S, they are all great drives from what I hear.

Well, today I bought one of the last retail Toshibas SD-M1712. I'm quite confident it's of better quality than Lite-On, besides it's made in Japan. :D

If you want to get one, get it quick. Newer model SD-M1802 is not as good and there's no RPC1 patched firmware for it yet (supposedly it uses a completely different (VIA) chipset than previous models)...

What drive did you get? All of the DVD Players I have play DVD+R/RW fine. Well, my Toshiba SD-3800 DVD Player plays it on and off, but it plays it most of the time.

DragonLord, why don't you check at Toshiba Sweden where to buy SD-M1712... There must be a store in your country which sells Toshiba DVD drives. The retail box includes a nice user's manual that is also in Swedish language!

interesting...mine is made in China.
manufactured May 2003. when was yours made, Han?
i'm surprised, i wouldn't have thought they manufacture the same drive in more than one plant.

i wonder if it means mine is not as well made...the old "made in Japan vs. made in China" debate... :o

Mine was made in October 2002, revision 000. Perhaps the revision number explains "made in Japan".

For now no one complained over Toshibas made in China...

On the label somewhere beside the SD-M1712 and "made in". Usually there's 000 or 001...

yeah, found it, it's revision 000, same as yours.
