I have a Toshiba DVD-Rom (SD-M1712). I am trying to set it to DVD Region 1 but I can't seem to do it. I am currently the computer administrator and I've tried a number of retail region 1 DVD's while I'm doing this (Madagascar, Fantastic 4, etc).

Does anyone know what the problem is?

i've already flashed my firmware with a region free one and it can play DVD's fine with WinDVD

my main concern though is using other programs, e.g. DVD Shrink

when i try to open my retail Region 1 DVD with it, here's the error that I get:

it's really strange because with my old hard drive my DVD rom never had this problem. after i installed my new hard drive and windows XP, i can't seem to set the drive region.

ideas on how i can set it?

Hmm.. your comment about the hard drive makes me think that there might be a problem with your IDE configuration. I'd check your jumpers to make sure they are correct. If you have them set to cable select, make sure you have a compatible cable.

You HAVE TO set the region BEFORE flashing Toshiba with region-free firmware!

Solution: flash the drive back to its original firmware, set region, flash again with region-free firmware.
