Windows Media player 9.0 and InCD

Postby ncw on Wed Dec 10, 2003 2:56 pm

I had InCD 4.0.7.2 installed and working on my Win2k machine, until I upgraded Windows Media Player to v9.0.
Now, when I put a CDRW in D: it suggestes I need to load the UDFReader - which should not be required with InCD loaded.
I also find I can not format CDRW discs.

WMP v9 seems to have installed cdr4_2k.sys & cdralw2k.sys in WINNT/System32/drivers - both files one is advised may need removing to get InCD working.

How do I best proceed?
Will removing the 2 .sys files have any bad consequences?

Help appreciated!

Don't remove any of these drivers - Windows Media Player needs them to be able to burn CDs.

It is not a driver conflict, but a driver installer conflict (I think). The (technically detailed) problem is that both InCD 4 and Media Player uses (upper) filter drivers of the cdrom class. Filter drivers are registered in a multistring value (REG_MULTI_SZ) named "UpperFilters" (and "LowerFilters" but not used in this precise case) in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

The installer of WMP7 (I tested with version 7 - from the description of ncw, the problem seems the same with 9) set the value of the entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilters

to REG_SZ:Cdralw2k

There are 2 problems:

-> it shall not be a REG_SZ (string) but a REG_MULTI_SZ (multistring)
-> an installer shall not overwritte previous value(s), but add its driver name to the multi-string.

You can either repair this manually by changing the value to a multistring and put incdpass.sys and Cdralw2k (careful, it's unicode and has a double \0 terminator - in hex that will make 49 00 6E 00 43 00 44 00 50 00 61 00 73 00 73 00 00 00 43 00 64 00 72 00 61 00 6C 00 77 00 32 00 6B 00 00 00 00 00), or de-install InCD and re-install InCD (InCD installer does not damage the filter driver key).

Ahead Software is currently preparing a tool to repair this key/value without touching manually the registry, neither have to de-install re-install.

Notice that if additional driver than InCD was registered in this key they will also have been removed and only re-installing the matching software will restore them.

Dear David

I have re-installed InCD as suggested.

Some CDRW dics previously in use are now fine for read & write, but some that were previously fine still demand the UDF reader to be loaded and I can't read them with InCD - they read OK on my Win98/Roxio-Adaptec machine.
Disc info in Nero shows a track as UDF/ISO9660 (mode2), exactly the same as the discs I can read with InCD.

Any ideas?

I still cannot (full) Format CDRW discs, even a disc that I have just sucessfully formatted on Roxio just stops with a message that suggests the disc is faulty - which it is not, as it will still re-format again in Adaptec.

More help please!

Looks like a problem between InCD and the drive - can you send me (by e-mail or attachement to a post) the 2 log files of InCD (incdsrv.log, error.log) after reproducing you mount and format failure problem?

David -

Suppose I want to only burn with Nero & never intend to use WMP9 to burn CD's? Could those drivers be deleted in that case? Is there an option in WMP9 setup or in Add/Remove Programs that will let you remove (or not install) the Adaptec plugin as an alternative to simply deleting the drivers? I currently have InCD 3.5.24.0 working flawlessly on my Win2K rig (which has only the default old Media Player, 6 I think) & consider it an essential backup tool, but I have been considering installing WMP9 - I'd like to be sure I wouldn't cripple InCD in the process. If it comes down to a choice between WMP9 & InCD, InCD wins.

Thanks,

Daiwa

David

I have repeated the failures as requested and will email the 2 files to you shortly.
I assume you want Error.log and SrvError.log
Thanks.

David

I sent you the requested log files on 4 Jan and subsequently, after failing to format a new CDRW, sent further log files on 8 Jan.

Since then I have heard nothing.

Please could you let me know what progress is being mde or when I can expect an answer. At present I am unable to format any disc with InCD.

Incidently, I see on another forum:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12100
that I am not the only one having this problem with InCD formatting!
In both cases we seem to have reputable modern hardware - mine in an almost new Dell Lattitude laptop.

Issues in http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12100 are now resolved.

I still need to re-check ncw recorder.

InCD 4157

Postby ncw on Sat Feb 21, 2004 1:31 pm

David

I have just installed InCD 4157 and regret to say that I am not finding any improvement. It would appear that the problems are not solved for the drive in my Dell Lattitude laptop.

My 'old' CDRW still requests me to load UDFREADER.
When I attempt to Format a CDRW the window freezes and nothing happens.

I will email you the two log files.
