Sony Optiarc America today unveiled its first dual USB bus powered slim portable DVD/CD rewritable drive to complement notebooks, netbooks or desktop PCs.

The new DRX-S90U drive boasts a sleek and ultra lightweight design and supports up to 8X DVD+R recording speeds, delivering a full 4.7 GB disc of video, data, music or images on standard 8X DVD+R media.

Additionally, the drive can record on 8.5 GB DVD+R Double/Dual layer and 4.7 GB DVD-RW discs at 6X speeds, DVD+RW at 8X, DVD-RAM at 5X and CD-R/RW at 24X

The drive comes in a retail package with Nero 10 CD/DVD burning application which is compatible with the Microsoft® Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, Windows® XP operating systems. Additionally, the drive is compatible with the Mac OS® X operating system.

From June 29 until July 15, 2011, Lite-On is running the "MyeNAU MyStyle" competition, a cover design competition for the Lite-On eNAU608. The competition is hosted on a specially created website.

The eNAU608 is a slim external DVD writer which look can be customized by placing any design under the plastic top of the drive. Lite-On is now organizing a competition and end users from Europe can win some nice prizes by submitting their own design for the eNAU608.

The available prizes are awarded by votes received. Participants can do their own promotion by using their Facebook and / or Twitter accounts. The overall winner will receive a Lite-On 12x Blu-ray burner.

Any end user who does not feel like contributing a design can vote on the designs submitted. Lite-On will randomly draw an eNAU608 DVD writer among voters. By submitting a vote you will automatically enrol for this draw.

Pioneer Japan recently announced its new slim, portable DVD writer, the DVR-XD10J. This USB bus powered drive is capable of 8x DVD±R, 6x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 5x DVD-RAM writing speeds and a maximum DVD read speed of 8x. The DVR-XD10J also includes features like Pioneer's PURE READ+ technology as well as an advanced firmware that reduces noise by adjusting the rotation speed when playing audio CD's and DVD movies.

The DVR-XD10J come bundled with an assortment of software from CyberLink and is expected to cost about 6,500 Yen ($80US) when it hits stores in early July.

I-O Data Japan sent out a press release this morning, announcing its new external 12x Blu-ray Disc writer, the BRD-UT12.  Based on what appears to be the LG BH12NS35, this USB 3.0 equipped drive is capable of 12x BD-R, 12x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 10x. The BRD-UT12 also supports 3D Blu-ray playback and features a handy LED that lights up blue when the drive plugged into a USB 3.0 port or green when using USB 2.0.

The BRD-UT12 comes bundled with WinDVD BD3D, DVD MovieWriter7 BD Version and Nero 9 Essentials and is expected to cost 22,100 Yen ($272US) when it hits stores in late June.

In the optical storage media sector, Verbatim is presenting its new Blu-ray 6x BD-R LTH Type with AZO technology. It offers 25GB of storage capacity with a 6x burning rate. It will also be available in a version with a wide printable surface as far as the inner ring. It is suitable for recording films in high definition, backing up large amounts of data and the long-term archiving of photos and videos. The USB 2.0 equipped BRD-U8S is capable of 8x BD-R, 8x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 8x. Using an optional USB cable, the drive can also be connected to one of JVC's Everio HD camcorders so that video can be transferred directly to Blu-ray Disc.
