[PX-708A] No 10x CD-RW re-write *Update: Plextor is dying*

Postby Winchet on Sat Sep 20, 2003 2:02 pm

My PX-708 (FW 1.00) doesn't want to write or erase my 10x CD-RWs.
I tested with used and brand-new Verbatim and Intenso 10x with Nero .11, Blindwrite and Alcohol120. None could erase the used disk or even write on the new ones.
The plextor starts, but after 3 seconds I hear a *klack* sound from the drive and the LED changes from yellow to green. Then the tray opens. Nothing erased or written.
A friend got his Plex today (with fw 1.01) but it is the same for him.

No probs with my 24x Verbatim.

First i thought, well it can only write on 24x, but the plextor website says, it can 4x, 10x and 24x.

Please test it and report your result.
Thanks.

Well, I think I found out why: My Plextor is dying! :o

Today, it can't even recognize CDs, burned and pressed (i.e. the Plextor CD). With RWs the LED just go out after inserting the disc, with pressed CDs, it flashes yellow 3 times, again and again. Plextools, says No disc.

It can still burn DVD+R/+RW, but hey....

I just erased and burned an 12x Philips CDRW at 10x. It worked fine. My drive came with the V1.01 firmware.

I was a bit surprised that it couldnt write 2,4 media faster than 2,4. I read on the net that it could do 4x on certain 2,4x media. Apparently the drive 'knows' what media are suitable for 4x writing and apparently the ones I have are not.

I have been trying to get my hands on 24x verbatim CDRW's but so far nobody seems to have them. I want them badly because I use CDRW's a lot and my plextor 48x cd burner can only write 4x, 10x and 24x, just like the PX-708.

This is the first I've heard about this. Can you tell me your source?

This occurred with both Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD+R media. These are among those suggested by Plextor for 8x writing.

This quote comes from the review done at CDR-Info here

This is a link to the page on their website where the compatible media are listed.

I still don't see where you're seeing that, but I will have to check with Plextor and see.

Well, the quote in the above post says that Plextor claims that some 4x DVD+R media can be burned @8x

And it can. However 2.4x rated media won't work at 4x.

I am sorry to hear that your drive appears to be dying.

My Siemens SS2624 wireless router just died yesterday (I think the blackout screwed it up, since it acted up right after the blackout, although it worked well for a month after that); my brother's small office lost two or three PCs as a direct result of the blackout, and he thinks his girlfriend's mobo may have been fried due to the blackout, although it could also contain some of those "unauthorized" faulty transistors(?) that I heard affected the mobo mfr market.

<off topic>
The counterfeit components are capacitors. More specifically, it is the electrolyte within the capacitors that is faulty.

You're welcome. I took the "?" to mean you weren't sure and would be receptive to a clarification.

Interesting... I had the Exact same problem with mine. Worked fine for a few hours, then had problems with Imation and Verbatim 10X CD-RW's. Then a few hours later, wouldn't read/write any CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW. DVD's read/write fine. Got the exact same error too, 3 Amber flashes. I exchanged the drive for a new one at the retailer I got it at, and so far the replacement's been fine.
