16X DVD Recording

Postby aviationwiz on Thu Aug 28, 2003 11:57 am

Found this on CDR-Info.

Sony announced that a new 650nm semiconductor laser diode is currently developed, allowing DVD recording speeds up to 16X. First samples of the new "SLD1236VL" series are planned to be available by December 2003, while mass production will start in June 2004. According to the company, current laser diodes used for Sony DVD recorders are capable of 8X recording.
Present monthly product output of the new diode is 1 million piecies and is expected to reach the 2 million in January 2004.

Frankly, I don't think we are going to see 16X Recorders, besides the other limiting factors, I remember something a year ago maybe that said we would have 20x DVD Readers by now.

Thanks for the info. June 2004 is a bit too long for me to wait, since I am currently without a DVD burner.
Oh well, 7 1/2 (8X) minutes for a full DVD is not too bad anyway ;)

It seems the Dec 2002 PC World article (I found it about three weeks ago, it was linked from one of the CD-R sites I believe) was right on the money then :)

Regarding your comment, I think we could see them, BUT 16X will probably be as far as it goes, due to limitations with current PC hardware, and physical limitations.
In any case, you will need a well defragmented drive, and a decent PC to avoid buffer underrun technology from slowing the burner down during an attempted 16X burn.

Question: When will we have an 8x burner that can do that? Plextors "8x" is a 6x-8x Z-CLV, and is said to burn a full DVD in about 10 minutes (most other 8x burners so far are quoting the same 10 minute burn time). 8x will be nice, if they can get it to do a full disk at 8x...

Wow! Thanks a lot for clarifying that. I didn't realize it wasn't a constant 8X from beginning to end!
This is the first I have heard it mentioned (maybe I missed that in the original news story here about it, if it was mentioned).

This will make 16X even less attractive, since the performance boost from 8X to 16X will likely be even smaller than the 3 3/4 minutes that I had thought, unless they use different (CAV or P-CAV) technology for 16X.

I am also glad then that I got my asking prices when I sold my 4X burners, so that I didn't lose anything by selling them, since I got them all as Hot deals anyway, and prices continue to drop...

I know that there are a few companies planning on introducting 12x writers by the first half of next year and 16x by the end of next year. I don't know if thats just wishful thinking of what.

Personally, I'd be happy if we had some 8x media...

There'll be 16x recorders... :o

And June 2004 is when the Diodes will start being mass produced. actual 16x recorders using these will come later.

Personally I'd be happy (for now) if Plextor releases the list of
8X-compatible 4X +R media soon :)
I am going to buy some more Verbatim 4X, in case the Memorex (Ricoh) 4X, which I have a lot of, are not on the 8X-compatible list...
I will return the Verbatim media if it isn't on the list.

There aren't that many 4X +R manufacturers, so I think between Verbatim and Ricoh (which I think covers a decent percentage of the 4X +R discs sold in the US?), there is a good chance that one of them is going to be on the list.

Something interesting in that Sony 16X laser anouncement ...
they also mentioned that there CURRENT laser diode is capable of 8X recording right now! :o

I really gotta wonder if all that is needed here is a firmware "adjustment" to the existing 4X DRU-510A? 8)

In any case, since I just bought my Sony a month ago, the 16X anouncement is helping me not go nuts over the Plex!

I figure this christmas the biggy will be the 8x burners...next christmas is when the 16xers will be taking center stage. At that point, that probably when I'll upgrade. I've got a DRU500A right now thats just fine for my needs. But when the 16x drives hit, it'll be time to switch on over and move my current drive over to my secondary machine.

Once we get 16x drives, and assuming the prices decrease accordingly, thats when DVD burning should really start taking center stage because it won't be near as arduous burning discs anymore :)
