Media Purchase

Postby Impulse on Tue Oct 14, 2003 10:11 am

I'm waiting to buy media, since my boss is going to pick up a 30-pack of Verbatium DVD+Rs at Sam's Club for $45. Not as cheap as the Memorex, but supposedly better media from what I've read here. I'll pick up a pack eventually though, I'm sure. :)

Not necessarily:
Verbatim are either Ricoh (same as Memorex 4X +R) or Mitsubishi Chemical (MCC).
If you get MCC, then they are probably or possibly better.

Memorex +R media is not as bad as some seem to think it is because the Plextor had some speed issues with them with the previous firmware:
The previous Plextor firmware didn't allow them to be burned at full 8X speed.

They might be slightly inferior to TDK or Verbatim (at 8X), but I am sure they will be fine in the long run...
They are made by Ricoh, just like TDK and some of the Verbatim discs out there.

I personally have only been buying Verbatim 4X +R (or any other +R media for that matter) when they are $1.00 or a bit above (i.e. $1.08) per disc + tax, since I could have bought thousands if I wanted to at those prices during the past three B1G1F sales...
As of right now my price point is closer to $1.00

If I remember correctly: From what I read, the profit margin on DVD media is still pretty big right now, even when using special sales prices in the calculations...

DVD Media Prices

Postby Impulse on Tue Oct 14, 2003 4:04 pm

Yeah, from what I've read here, the Memorex media seemed just fine and dandy with the latest firmware, which I will be upgrading to as soon as I install my drive. :) My order came in today...can't believe how fast it got here. I ordered the Plextor PX-708a from Amazon around noon on Monday and it arrived today at 9am. :) I'll probably be using the $50 promo certificate on 25 packs of Memorex DVD+Rs. :)

As for the prices you are quoting, where do you buy your media from? The best deal I've found is the deal from Amazon, although I realize I don't really know of a lot of vendors that sell media. I don't go to my local Best Buy, Staples, or OfficeMax too often (no CompUSA or Circuit City here  ), but I have yet to see a deal as good as $1/disc for quality media. Care to share your secrets? :) Thanks for the help...now that I've got a DVD burner, I have to start paying attention to DVD media prices. :)

David (et all):
Thanks for the thread. I just ordered a spindle and a bunch of USB 2.0 cable & firewire cables.

Overall, it was less than 1/2 the price I'd pay up here for these same items.

Message to Canadians: I had the order shipped to Florida. Amazon.COM won't ship computer hardware up here yet. I also avoid Canada Customs duties as a result
