audio cd skips diy fix req

i have an audio cd that i bought used and one of the tracks skips
if thats the right word although it sound more than a skip the track wont play i have heard that you can repair cd's ie with car polish or similar stuff thats slightly abrasive although im not sure
i cant take the cd back so im stuck with it so ill try anything to fix it
what about brasso i have tried the normal cd cleaner you buy
the spay stuff alchohol type didnt work i havent tried toothpaste yet any ideas its the disk not the drive and its not a home made disk

There are CD polishing kits available for just such problems. I haven't tried one, so I don't know how well they work. And I don't know what is available to you in the U.K. However, if I were you I would stick with the commercial products and avoid the toothpaste trick. I've heard it myself and tried it for fun on an old CD just to see what would happen. The toothpaste I used was too abrasive and made things much worse instead of better.

Also, if you can manage to extract the disc to your computer, you can always burn your own fresh copy. Try EAC for this task.
