Backitup 2.0 Nightmare

Postby chano on Sat Apr 08, 2006 12:43 pm

Does anyone know of a tool or a method that will allow one to recover their files from a corrupt Nero drive backup archive?

I decided to check out the drive backup capabilities of backitup in anticipation of getting a new windows box. I let it back up my C drive over night and then ran the verify wizard the next day. This is where everything went to pot. The verify wizard managed to crash the file system on my drive and corrupt the master boot record. I tried many, many recovery methods over the course of the next several days, but in the end, I lost all of my data except for the alleged "back up", which I wrote to an external HDD. On my new machine I installed Nero 7, and with nothing left to lose, ran the verify wizard on the backup. The first file is corrupt, go figure.

At this point, I don't need to restore the drive, I just need my data back. I tried recovering my data with GetDataBack, which works, except the files are encoded in Nero's compression standard. So I then tried to get Backitup to restore each individual file after recovery, but alas it failed to recognize them as one of its own.

I have also tried running the actual restore wizard many times, from inside windows, off the boot disc, from internal to external drives and back again, you name it. It always gives an error 54% of the way into restoring the first file, or at least it does when I can even coax the restore wizard into recognizing all of my drives.

Oh the irony of it all. Nice back up program Nero.

Hi Chano,

I'm checking with our engineers in Germany to see if we have such a utility for recovering data from a defective Hard Drive Backup by BIU2.

I do know that I've had some succes in recovering data from a defective File Backup using BIU2.

Could you provide me with some information about your system, and the version of Nero BackItUp that you were or are using for this process? This is the first I've heard of BIU damaging a system when simply doing a 'Verify' of a backup. I've seen a few where the Backup is bad and a failed restore attempt has caused damage to the Boot Drive, but not just from a verify of a backup disc. So I would very much like as much details as possible so that I can try and duplicate this issue and create a Bug Report on it.

Regards,

Craig
