I guess i'm looking for the best performance for around $100. IF I can get a good 8X for $20-$30 more than that, then I guess I can exceed my initial budget. Right now the best values seem to be Pioneer DV-106's , Toshiba (I don't recall the model number, and the NEC (1300)...all of which look to be 4x burners. I'm interested in the new NEC2500 8x burner, but am just curious about their hardware quality and compatibility with set top players. I used my Sony DRU-500 (apparently to death) almost exclusively for backing up movies and creating "home" movies and in the end the DVD laser head died in a little over a year (wouldn't you know it...right past the warranty period). I'd like to replace it with a drive that will alst me longer than that....but then agian, within that time we should have dual layer burners out too. Maybe it's worth just replacing whatever I buy now with one of those down the road.
I saw only dvd+r burners at officemax.com. I'm looking for a dual-format burner, as I have about 300 dvd-r discs sitting at home collecting dust until i get a new burner.
Does anyone inNorthern NJ know of a wlakin place i can get a decent price from?
