Something went wrong, I just got a yellow man in my first post so here I send another one. Hope it goes better now.

Hello to you all.

I wonder which program who will give me the best quality on a movie that is 2 h 30 min long and that I want to shrink so

that it will fit on only one DVD disc of these programs.

DVD2One 1.3 or 1.4
DVD Shrink 2.3
Nero Recode 2.0.0.7

By the way, I got an LG GSA-4040B with firmware 302 if that's of any use.

PS. I'm not interested in making DivX movies or anything like that, as you could do with Nero, just to make DVD-films

smaller so that they could fit on one disc as the original DVD-movies do. DS.

FYI You should be using Nero 3.0 Beta 5 not 2.3. Definitely better results.

I haven't been impressed with DVD2One for quite some time.

If I had to rank them...

1) Shrink 3.0 B5 (still has an edge in terms of quality, just takes more time than recode, which is basically DVDShrink)
2) Recode 2007
3) DVD2One

DVDShrink and Recode 2 are pretty much the same.Look a little different, that's all.
AnyDvd or DVD Region Free with DVD2one don't render that bad of results. It just feels like you have more control over what you want with DVDShrink.

www.dvdshrink.org is the official site for DVDShrink, click on the "Where" link and it will be @ the bottom of the page.

I've found that in dark scenes with smoke/fog and some action with deep analysis, Shrink does a better job than Recode. I've backed up 5-6 movies and done a direct comparison recently, granted you have to look pretty hard to see it, but it's there.

You are right, DVD2One doesn't produce bad results, but you can tell the difference in a comparison. Although I haven't tried the most recent release, so maybe things have improved.

Big plus, Shrink is free.

Yeah I gave the http://www.dvdshrink.info/ link 'cause it has helpful tips and all that. All encompassing I suppose.Very useful site.

tazdevl,
Check out this link.http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/114/1
It has some comparisons of quite a few apps tested together. It has screenshots of a couple of movies that were rip't with all the apps to give you an idea of the difference between them.Very miniscule.Go through all 10 pages of the article to get an idea of how they tested them. Please excuse that they use DVDSrink 2.3 but it's still a great article.

I prefer Nero Recode 2, it's faster, and gives a higher quality picture from my tests.

Well, I haven't tried Nero Recode yet, but I do agree that DVD Shrink is very slow! ...hard to compete with it's price though!

I love Recode 2 but I can't use the Nero Digital function properly.
See post here http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14335
It is faster than DVD Shrink but the audio prob I have keeps me from using it consistently.

Not free, but I love clone dvd. it's pretty quick & super easy but you do have to use a seperate ripper (no biggie for me).

I give it 3 thumbs up. Well, 2 of them are thumbs, anyway.

I like CloneDVD also.I had a problem there when I couldn't control the speed of the burn but that was ratified with v.1.3.9.8.It's great. All movies look good with it.

I haven't used DVD2one in a while, so I can't really speak for the newer versions, but the older versions (the ones that supported full disk copy) were not very good quality-wise when you tried to compress 9GB down to 4.37GB.

Now, it's gonna be very hard for any transcoding tool to do it. But my opinion was always that DVD2one looked worse.

DVD Shrink 3.0 B5 and Recode 2 are very close in terms of quality (mainly since they are almost identical). Recode 2 does have one very big advantage, however, and that is the ability to replace titles with a custom image or custom blank colored screen. Depending on what you replace, you can gain a lot of space this way. Select to replace titles with a plain black colored screen for the smallest file size.

Of course, other things that can help make way for more space for video is to remove audio tracks you don't care about. (DTS tracks are especially large and should be gotten rid off if its a long movie - like you said yours is.) You can also remove subtitles that you don't want, though they are generally small and removing them won't normally have a noticeable effect on the video quality.

Personally, I would try DVD Shrink 3.0 B5 first since its free. What have you got to lose? Compress it, then view it on your computer in WinDVD or PowerDVD and see what you think. You don't even have to burn it to a DVD. Completely no-cost option.

DVD2One does OK with stuff less than a "full" dual layer disc.If you can get a flick less than 7 g's,the quality is fine.

Very true.Helps out a lot.I don't have a system to listen to DTS anyhow so it's not that important to me.

For future reference:
The forums at cdrlabs allow you to 'edit' posts.
Just click on the 'Edit' button.

You can also delete a post, [b]as long as there are no posts AFTER the post you want to delete[b].

Note that if the last n posts in a thread are all your own posts, you can delete all of them, one by one, as long as you go backwards (see 'as long as there are no posts below it' rule above).

Hope this helps! :)

I know this isn't your very first post, but welcome!

Thanks, I'm a bit stupid on this so far but hopefully I will become a "hacker" in these forums.

Hmm, a hacker in understanding all I could do here in the forums I mean.
