edit - oops, you wanted the DVR-111 non-D... in that case, buy A DVR-111D and flash it with a 111 firmware, as Ian suggested :P

The A09 was the last A series Pioneer sold in the US. Since then, we've been stuck with the D models.

If you really want the DVD-RAM write capabilities, I'd buy a DVR-111D and flash it with the DVR-111 firmware or pick up the ASUS ASUS DRW-1608P3S which is based on the DVR-111.

So how do you flash the 111d into a 111a? Is there a firmware out there that will always bitset +r to dvd-rom?

Yes, The Dangerous Brothers released a firmware 8.29 that automatically bitsets all DVD+R to DVD-ROM and enables DVD-RAM and Labelflash.

the official buffalo 8.29 firmware has auto bitsetting as well; TDB just makes it region free. but you might as well use the TDB to make things easier.

download Pioneer 111L 8.19 and 8.29 firmware from here (http://tdb.rpc1.org/). flashing to 8.19 will crossflash your drive to a 111L (make sure you reboot after you flash to 8.19). then, flash to 8.29. you must flash to 8.19 first, as 8.19 includes the kernel which crossflashes your drive.
