Blocking Autostart programs?

Postby glock20rocks on Wed Feb 19, 2003 1:54 am

Is there any way to prevent programs form adding themselves to autostart?
Going into X-Setup/RegCleaner is kinda pain; there are only two programs that should always autostart, IMHO: Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm.

OK, not a huge deal, but something (ie, Windows) keeps putting a program in the autostart section of the registry. The program's run command is:

mobsynce.exe /logon

Now that .exe does NOT exist on my computer. I permentaly zapped it (from Linux so Windoze doesn't show it as deleted when it really isn't).

The program is supposed to be a part of IE that syncs offline web pages. Thing is, I *don't* and won't use IE yet it keeps reappearing. Kinda annoying.

And does anyone know what that nero autostart program does besides slow down boot times?

In general, most programs have an option to disable loading up on starting.

However, sometimes I have to manually disable the programs from starting up with the "MSCONFIG" command.

I'm running 98se btw.

Thing is, the programs GONE. Some part of windows is doing it. I guess it's not really hurting anything, but it's just one more thing for the computer to try and find durning boot. Win2K boots slow enough already! If only BootVis worked under 2K.

Did you try looking in the registry? Don't have a Windows machine on hand to check, but it's something like this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Current Version/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Run (and another called Run Once)

There are 2 wonderful little freeware programs by Mike Lin: StartUp Control Panel, which let you control and edit all starting up applications and StartUp Monitor which alerts you the moment a program tries to configure itself to run at system start up. Get them here:

Yes, thanks! The monitor is just what I wanted. I have been manually editing the registry to get rid of the thing, but it keeps popping back. That'll help alot!
