Do CD's break / shatter in a 52x burner ?

Postby DavidI on Mon Dec 02, 2002 10:21 pm

Just wondering - looking to get a new 52x burner - LiteOn or wait for the Sony....

But ...... I remeber "old" reports od discs shattering when read at 52x ...

Are 52x burners safe to use with current CD media ?

Why wait? They're all pretty much the same... buy a Lite-ON and flash it to a Sony, buy a Sony and flash it to a Lite-ON. Do whatever you want... (as long as they all have the 6 series chipset).

Already used my 52x cd-rom for few years and read a lot of low quality cd, but it haven't shattered any of my cd collection. I think this might help you http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7597&highlight= . Just get my liteon 52x cdrw and it works perfect for me.

Well discs can shatter, but not just on 52x. If a disc shatters at 52x, then why wouldn't it at 48x as there is only 4x diff? It could very well be called a marketing policy of companies which are slow in releasing faster burners, and have decided to stop at 48x.
However, certain precautions should be taken which i mentioned in the other thread -
- Use good quality media
- Dont burn 10 discs in a row at 52x.
- Make sure the blank disc you use is not damaged at all.

But if you aren't going to burn 10 discs in a row, what is the point in burning at 52x? The 10/20-second differences between 48x and 52x (and even 32x/40x and 52x) are only really worth bothering about if you're burning many CDs. If you're only doing one, as a background task, why not burn at 16x and save yourself the risk of getting a dodgy burn?

I think the whole "disc shattering" problem arose from putting a cracked or damaged disc in the drive, and while spinning at high RPM the added stress broke the disc.

I used to think that if a person burns a lot of discs at 52x in a row, it would physically challenge the drive a lot which may result in cracking of a disc because of temperature etc.. After all a disc is spinning in there at pretty high speeds, :-?

Its not a major jump in RPM speed from 48x CAV to 52x CAV

is there any way a cd burner company can make it so that they don't break while reading or burning a disc?

yeah, they make the drive read and write at a slower speed.

or introduce multiple beam technology, similar to that used in the Kenwood cd-rom's. ('cept it would require another technical leap to manufacture a multi-beam burner).

I think manufacturers are going to concentrate more on DVDR than on making multi beam CD burners. CD Burners have almost reached their max, that doesn't mean CDs will become extinct, but I don't see a chance of multi beam burners at all.

Not completely. Samsung actually had a hard time facing the angry consumers.

true, coolestnitish, but who's to say a similar technology won't be implemented in DVD-RW's. Oh, the possibilities.

Dave:

Don't wait. Go for the Lite On (52246S).

I've had it for over a month now and I am very happy with it.

I've been using old 12x rated Memorex discs at 40x with out trouble.

If the disc is flawed/cracked do not use it at all, regardless of what speed you're going to record it at.
