Can a PS2 read DVD+R DL?

The question is in the subject, can someone end a dispute between me and a friend on this subject..
I think it can read DVD+R DL..
My friend thinks a PS2 laser can't read the second layer on the disk..

I burned a copy of one of my Dual Layer DVD movies onto Verbatim DL media set to DVD-ROM booktype and it plays in my PS2 (30000 series) just fine.
