CDRW write speed limitation on certain media

can someone tell me , why certain CDRW Drives are unable to burn certain cd at their optimals speeds.

I know sometimes the CD-R media is to blame for this, however i want a physical explaination how certain media differs in
causing certain writers to burn data on the cd with less then optimal speeds.

For example I have 40X verbatim CDRW DRIVE this is able to burn 48X Sony Media at that drive's optimal, speed.
However my brother has a 32x Nesi (no name) burner that can only burn the same exact sony media (from the spindle) at 16x speed?

In this situtation what is the physcial differences that limit his CDRW Drive or if the media is to blame how is the media affecting his drive compared to mine ?

It could be that the Nesi drive's media database says that the Sony media is only good at 16x, while the Verbatim drive's media database says that the Sony media is good at 40x. You could try updating the firmware on the Nesi drive if you want better write speeds. If a firmware update is available, the manufacturer may have updated the media database.
