Cendyne 48x12x48.. make up their minds!

Postby dude051 on Sat Dec 28, 2002 7:44 pm

:o My parents bought me a new Cendyne 48x12x48 drive... which I have heard many good things about for it being a Lite-On and with rebates come out to like $20.... but the sad part is when opened it wasnt the Lite-On... it was the other crappy Optorite (CW 4802). Wanting to find answers I came to the forums... to find out like most have that there are two models.. the LTR-48125w (Lite-On) and the CW4802 (Optorite crap...)... went to go exchange for the Lite-On.. but no one has it.. now... i find myself with three known models... the Lite-On... the Optorite and the new Aopen one i just got...i am now forced to this Aopen model(written just like this) CD-RW 48x12x50. First of all I want to know if anyone knows what Cendyne is doing.... are they making a vendor change for good? or this some kinda holiday bust? And also... since I am basically stuck with this Aopen... anyone know if its good? So far i've found it burn at an almost complete 48x most of the time... but it seems to have bad CD-RW compatibility... i tried my Memorex CD-RW 4x's on it and InCD gives a disc error at 98%... one last thing.. anyone know if any other distrubitor sells the Cendyne 48x12x48 other than Office Max? so maybe i can still try for the Lite-On..... .... any answers or replies wanted.... thanx

When buying a Cendyne CD-RW drive, look for the model number on the back of the box. This is an easy way to tell what drive your getting. If the drive's model number starts with LTR, then you know your getting a Lite-On drive. Another way to tell is to look at what buffer underrun protection is being advertised on the box. If it states SmartBurn, then you know your getting a Lite-On drive too. Cendyne has several manfacturers for their 48x12x48 model like Lite-On and Optorite. Some other places that sell Cendyne Drives are Circuit City, Fry's Electronics, Staples, and Office Depot.

I wish I could help you - I went looking for a Cendyne Lite-On at 3 different OfficeMax stores in a 300 mile area (Dallas - East Texas (where I live) - Shreveport) last week and all they had were the Optowrite and Benq drives!

yup yup.. i am 100% turned down with the Optorite.. thats what i first had.. and it was horrible... it supported only one of the medias i tried in it... and when it did work.. it burned at only around 32x on a 40x disk.... needless to say im not goin to mess with it... but like i said before.. this Aopen isnt too bad... just would really really love the Light-On... i havent searched a 3 mile radius  but just about everywhere else here in San Antonio.... havent tried staples tho.. thanx for the info guys... (wanting more tho if anyone can  )

Somebody from this forum has done a review on AOpen CRW-4850 before and you can check out his thread. You can update to the latest firmware which is 1.04. Personally, I like AOpen but it cannot copy a lot of protected CDs. But for general purpose, I say quite good.

If you want a liteon so bad then buy one directly, they aren't that expensive. Buying a Cendyne is very risky since not all the boxes have a label with the model or are correctly labeled. Sometimes they recycle and the specs in the box are not the same of the drive, happened to me twice both times the drives came with higher specs and luckly they were liteons. The only sure way to know what drive you are getting is opening the box and seeing the label of the drive which has the model of the drive and the other techniques already metioned here.
Good luck!

I had gotten the Lite-On some several months ago. $50 after rebate. :D Last week I went back and got the special for $20 after rebate. Same supprise. Good thing my trusting friend of mine bought a Buslink 48X burner just after Thanksgiving. It was a Lite-On. Talked him into trading.

There's an Excellent Deal This Week at Best Buy for an OEM Lite-On 52x24x52 CD-RW drive under the BUSlink brand for $44.99. It's a Lite-On drive straight out of the box and Nero and Windows will identify it as a Lite-On LTR-52246S. The only thing not Lite-On is the manual.

The Optorite drives are really crappy, had a 40x12x40 for a while, it was cheap but what a piece of shit, never buy one of those don't matter how cheap they are, as for Aopen I hava a 32x12x48 for over quite along time burnt over 500 cds had no problems with it, and also an exellent reader too.

Ya... the Optorite 48x16x48 was one of the most crappy drives i have ever seen... altough the AOpen like u said had nice read times and burns quite nicely... just I couldnt get it to accept any of the RW media I dished out... although it could just be my comp... but to add my new Lite-On formats RW's quite nicely...I guess i'll have to restate my statment from before.."no problems at all.....un like the first moterized drink holder(Optorite) I had before... heh... "... :P .... everything against the Optorite... a lil against the AOpen, but great read/burn times i must add... and nothing against the Lite-On.. all at a great price too! Laterz and happy new years to everyone
