confused with DVD-Ram cartridges, or just forget them

Postby brookz on Thu May 20, 2004 2:00 pm

I have Panasonic DMR-E50 DVD recorder. What is my best option to use these cartridge disks with my PC. Do the Panasonic multi DVD burners read and write with cartridges?

I have several 9.4 cartridges I got at a great price. Most of what I see says PC DVD Burners write to 4.7, but do they write and read to 9.4?

Sorry if I sound totally inept, I'm really an educated guy. Most specs I see for these drives just don't say much.

Would the PANASONIC LF-P567CU USB 2.0 be compatible to my situation? Is it an adequate drive to invest in? I'm not that worried about speed as opposed to ease of use and quality.

I guess I can just forget the cartridges and just invest in regular 4.7 discs with a new LG GSA-4082B Multi Drive.

I currently own the Panasonic DMR-E85H and 100H and your best option to use the cartridge DVD-RAM discs with a PC is with the Panasonic SW-9582 which retails for under $200 USD.

Double Sided DVD-RAM cartridges store data on both sides of the disc. The disc must be flipped in order to access either side.

This drive is not compatible with DVD-RAM TYPE1 (cartridge) discs. I personally would not invest in a USB 2.0 2x DVD-RAM drive when you can get the LG GSA-4082B which writes DVD-RAM at 3x or the LS GSA-4120B which writes DVD-RAM at 5x available in June.

That would be my recommendation as I purchased the GSA-4082B to use in conjunction with my Panasonic DVD Recorders and dumped the cartridges.

Why not go on in one thread instead of two? I was confused if it was another subject.

I'd like to recommend GSA-4120B instead of GSA-4082B. I have one 4082B but 4120B's many times better from what 've seen so far. Availability of 5x DVD-RAM is not yet known.

Thank you very much. It is great information to work with.

Sorry about the separate post. Just thought I was narrowing my questions.

I don't understand why LG drives is mentioned in this tread. LG drives doesn't support cartridge DVD-RAM. The original poster asked for cartridge based DVD-RAM. Only Panasonic support cartridge based DVD-RAM. The last drive from Panasonic was the LF-D621 which wrote DVD-R at 4x speed, DVD-RW at 1x and DVD-RAM at 3x. This drive was in the same generation as Pioneer 106. I didn't see any new drives from Panasonic.

I'm sure they'll be announcing a 5x DVD-RAM drive soon :D

That is interesting because the original poster mentioned LG and the possibility of forgoing the cartridge-based DVD-RAM discs

I was aware of those drive and also DVD MULTI Drive SW-9583-C http://panasonic.co.jp/mke/en/device/st ... _9583.html
From the specs it seem to be a rebadged LG-Hitachi drive.

But I couldn't find any cartridge based DVD-RAM drive that can write at 5x speed (Panasonic LM-AB120ME DVD-RAM disc)
http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/6592 ... discs.html.

The above link was the only link I found about cartridge based DVD-RAM at 5x speed. Seem to me that this format is dying out. The drive you have mentioned are all in the generation of 2x speed or 4x speed drives. It seems that Panasonic is giving up the PC burner market for DVD-RAM. In the US i hava read they where very succesfull with DVD-RAM video recorders. But in Europe this seem not to be the case.

In 1999 there where predictions that in 2004 90% of DVD players will be compatible with this format. We are now in 2004 but this is not the case.

Sweetburner: I guarentee you that Panasonic is NOT giving up on DVD-RAM burners for the PC market...

Actually, if anything, demand for DVD-RAM is growing, not shrinking. Mind you it is nowhere near (and never will be) the demand of DVD-R or DVD+R, but it is a format with completely different uses, and very powerful when used for its' purpose!

Panasonic, Maxell, LG, and Optodisc are all firm supporters of DVD-RAM, and pushing it forward steadily.
