i must admit i don't understand your comment:

So the name has nothing to do with the Roman "God-Father", then. Is the emphasis on the first syllable?

what did you mean by it?
does the word 'yoav' have any meaning in Latin?

i find it rather unlikely that there would be any connection though...my memory is rather rusty, but i believe Yoav Ben Tzruya (or an other historical figures named Yoav) lived a good few hundred years before the Roman republic/empire.

ancient Hebrew is somewhat related to Pheonecian, Pheonecian is somewhat related to ancient Greek, Greek is somewhat related to Latin. but i find this rather far fetched to think that there's any direct relation. besides the Hebraic name Yoav could be much more ancient than that. Yoav Ben Tzruya is the most famous (or infamous, as you please) historical figure bearing that name. i don't have a Concordance handy to check out other references to the name Yoav in the Bible.

welcome :)

PS error correction: after googling a bit and reading a bit in websites about the Bible, i find that Tzruya was not a sister of David. don't know how she was.
just that her 3 sons were warriors of David, Yoav the most notable.

I was just alluding to a possible phonetic similarity between "Jove" and "Yoav" as one syllable. Jove is a short form of "Jupiter", the Roman boss-god who sits in the clouds and throws thunder bolts. The Greek equivalent is "Zeus" (the Romans stole most of their gods from the Greeks).

I did a bit of Googling too and found this site which is a bit superficial but has a lot of names. Here's what they have to say:
  • Jove: Derived from the stem of Iupiter. This was another name of the Roman god Jupiter.
  • Jupiter: From Latin Iupiter, which was from dyeu-pater, composed of the elements dyeus (see Zeus) and pater "father".
  • Zeus: The name of a Greek god, related to the old Indo-European god dyeus whose name probably meant "shine" or "sky".
  • Yoav: Hebrew form of Joab
  • Joab: Means "YAHWEH is the father" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament he was the commander of King David's army, but when Solomon came to power he was executed.

OK, got it now.
no, no connection between the names.
if anything, Jove is also a name of a Biblical figure - Jove from The Book of Jove. but that's something altoghether different.

hehe...yes, because when King David died, Yoav participated in Adoniah's rebellion.
Adoniah was the eldest living son of David at the time he died, so rightfully he should've been the heir. but David named Solomon as his heir...because of the wiles of Bath-Sheba (Solomon's mother) who David had loved (another story...). So Adoniah rebelled, and some of David's followers took his side, Yoav Ben Tzruya being one of them.
"executed" is putting it mildly...he was slaughtered while holding the horns of the Altar!!! :o

....l just read in one of your first postings that you had some difficulty with Yoav breastfeeding - I know a brilliant breast feeding counsellor who helped me and my wife - she lives in the Tel Aviv area - if you want her details let me know. BTW, I would recommend (if you are bottle feeding Yoav) to buy some cordless headphones and feed him and watch a decent DVD at the same time without waking up the boss

thank you kindly.
however, it's too late. we gave up on breast feeding.
we did have a certified breastfeeding consultant (yo'etzet hanaka) come to our house but it didn't help much.
he got too used to the ease of eating from a bottle, from hospital. they literally shove food into the little babies...to make them gain weight and to quiet them (they have many to take care of in the nursery)...and my wife couldn't breast feed the first day, and the next few days couldn't at nights - she was recuperating from the C-section operation. so he was 'ruined' by the bottles, and would complain about breast feeding, eat only a little and then cry hysterically etc. until fed by a bottle.
too bad, my wife really wanted to breast feed. :(

my wife pumps for breast milk and we give him that, and of course baby food too (Similak).

as for the headphones, yeah i use that trick already. :D

....hi, we had a similar problem with the first and third baby - it took 2-3 weeks to sort it out. Don't give up! The person I know is the head of Le Leche Leauge in Tel Aviv - she's bloody good - and my wife can encourage your wife (my wife is a born again breast feeder!)...so if you want some help, please let me know ...I've been there.....
