DRU510A and Media Problems/Questions

Postby nXt on Fri Jun 06, 2003 1:34 am

Ok, bought some DVDPro "brand" 4x dvd-r. And in my previous thread, I burned 2 dvds at 4x successfully (though it took 30 minutes so probably went 2x).

And since those 2, I've tried 4x and 2x using nero and they all burned coasters within a few minutes after starting.

So I went out and bought some Fuji DVD+R 2.4x. And when I run Nero, It auto selects 2.4x write speed. With the DVDPro brand, I can select 1x, 2x, or 4x. Why is that?

Burned 20 coasters so far and Not very happy :( Guess I'll return the other 75 discs to Meritline :(

Your drive can probably detect what speeds the media is good for, and Nero shows only those speeds. That's probably why some discs show up to 4x and others show up to only 2.4x.

Another possibility is that your firmware isn't up to date. If I am remembering correctly, the older firmware revisions of this drive limit DVD+R speed to 4x, whereas the newer firmware lets it write at 4x. You can update to the newest firmware for free, AFAIK.

Something is really screwed up, can't burn jack anymore this this media. works fine with the fuji for some reason.

Anyways. the DRU510A is new and there's no updated firmware for it.

 Sorry; that info was for the 500A, not the 510. My mistake.

Why this issue necessitated another post is beyond me.

As I said in the other post. DVD media market is like the CDR market a year and a half ago, manufacturing quality is questionable with the cheap stuff, buy brand name media. You didn't buy brand name media and look what happened.

The drive automatically selects the best speed to burn for the media. I'd assume it's based on the ATIP info and compares it against what the Sony engineers plug into the drive. Nero selects the fastest speed by default and if a speed for a specific type of media is unavailable, you can't choose it.

I guess what I'm getting at is that you should just buy quality media and let the drive burn discs without trying to mess with speed. It causes much fewer headaches. I backed up my AVIs, MP3s and some work documents today, burned 25 DVD+Rs with no coasters and no problems @ 4X.

I'd also recommend you use RecordNow, does a much better job than Nero burning DVDs IMO.

Best Buy has 4X Verbatims for $2/disc. Best deal I've found so far, that includes online retailers.

LiteOnGuy, only way to speed up the 510A is if Sony releases a firmware update than enables 4X -RW speeds.

Sorry, I was thinking about the 500A, not the 510A.

I believe DVDPro is (usually) manufactured by Princo.
I found this out many months after I had used a bunch about a year ago (which someone had recommended) when discs were still $5 a piece and up for name brands...
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW
TEAC CD-W540E 40X CD-RW
