DVD Bug loses data on Win2K/XP? (KB Article 329112)

Postby jeremym on Wed May 07, 2003 7:02 am

Microsoft KB Article 329112 describes a bug where if you burn files onto a DVD in multiple passes, once the stored data exceeds 4GB Win2K/XP will only "see" the first pass and nothing else.

This is the news I got while installing the bundled Veritas RecordNowDX with my new Sony DRU-500AX.

Not wanting to make coasters out of (relatively) pricey DVD-RW's, I went to Microsoft for a fix, but they don't make it available!

Further, I haven't been able to find any information on this bug anywhere else on the net. Can anyone verify this problem? Does anyone have the two files for Win2K that fixes it?

According to the knowledge base article, you can call Microsoft and get the patch that fixes this problem if you really require it. It appears that haven't released the patch for general download because they are still testing to make sure it doesn't break anything else and plan to release a comprehensive fix with the next service pack.

If calling doesn't work for you, there are some third-party udfs.sys drivers listed for download on this page that may or may not be helpful:

Finally, you won't be wasting money making pricey DVD-RW coasters, because you can always erase them and rewrite them if something goes wrong.
