A new version was released. Which can be found at http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

dvd identifier V3.6.3
Changelog
[APRIL-10-2005]

Updated manufacturer database.

New format for the manufacturer database. In order to be able to receive future database updates you will need to upgrade to V3.6.3.

Fixed the problem where a drive's dvd+r dl write capabilities were sometimes incorrectly reported.

Some minor tweaking.

Thanks!

Is there still any automatic way to detect all the TY fakes and other discs misusing codes of various quality manufacturers?

Or is it still down to detective work trying to identify each disc batch whether it's genuine or not?

It's still detective work. There is no digital way to find out if it's fake TY(maxell/TDK/MCC). For this reason we will include extra info with of the next release which wil state the codes for serial numberings of TY because there simpley is no other way and most problems are with TY.
However I can identify 90% of the fakes I've seen so far by the feeling.

Also another flaw is that it still says manufacturer while that one can mean technology supplier. So PHILIPC16 states Philips and not CMC and AN32 points to anwell. (Who is just a supplier of the technology.)
But so does the competition.Still it can link back more MID's as any of the competition. And really that is not marketing.
So if you got weird codes then try it.
DVDidentifier was the first who could identify the Thai media disc's and this new release can detect quite some disc's from which it said manufacturer not in database befor.

Thanks for the clarification.

I appreciate the efforts of the team. At least it helps with the detective work, which can be a pain in the butt sometimes.
