4X DVD-R media readability warning

Postby VEFF on Fri Nov 22, 2002 12:00 am

I had been looking forward to getting 4X DVD-R media for my DRU-500A, but now I may have to stick to 2X, unless someone can prove Maxell's claim wrong, in the article posted by Ian.

I have two relatively new home DVD players and 2 DVD-ROM drives, so I am not in a big rush to get a new one, just to read 4X DVD-R media...
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW
TEAC CD-W540E 40X CD-RW

What's up with Maxell?
First they announce that 52x cd speeds are much more dangerous than 48x speeds and now this thing with 4x DVD-R media?

Anyway, if it's true then this is very bad news for the DVD-R format in general. The high compatibility has always been a big advantage.
But if even a DVD-ROM player can't read it then how will the stand-alone DVD players read them?
