Hi Everybody! ("Hi Dr. Nick" <--- I couldn't help myself)

I'm the new hardware guy here at CDRlabs.com. I'll be helping out Ian with the reviews and other things. Also, plan to see me hanging around the forums quite a bit helping out you guys as much as I can.

Hope to hear from you all!

Derek

P.S. Like my Avatar? I thought I'd mix it up a tad.

Welcome Derek. Can you tell us something about your background and how you got hooked up with CDRLabs?

Hiya cfitz! Well, I'm a general techie type. I used to write for the now defunct PC News Center. I did about 15 review for them of various hardware, from DVDROMs to Soundcards to Speakers to Video Cards to USB Hubs to, uh, everything. After that site closed down (the creator had no time for it anymore and he didn't feel like telling me :( ), I mostly posted my shorter reviews on various message boards ( www.amdforums.com comes to mind, in addition to some eopinions.com). I've always liked the stuff I've read at cdrlabs.com, and I've been a fond reader of the message boards here for CDRW stuff. As for how I got the position here, I will leave that to Ian if he feels like talking about it.

Well, thanks for filling us in. I look forward to reading your contributions. One of these days I will want to ask you for your opinions on video cards and sound cards. But I'm not ready to buy just yet.

Hmm. Well, I shouldn't get into it right now since things are liable to change by the time I actually get around to making a purchase and I don't want to waste your time by posting hypothetical questions right now. But here is a preview of what I will be looking for when I do get around to asking: I will be looking for a card that supports video capture. Good DVD playback support will also be important. Gaming won't be important to me. I was planning on investigating the ATI All-in-Wonder series for one.

If gaming isn't important I would go with an older ATI AIW card. The dongle that I have on my 8500DV is very useful, and completely necessary. I do not believe that there is even a slightly modern Personal Cinema to compete with the ATI AIW series. Other AIW cards have video inputs, but they often wont have audio inputs. Unfortunately, the Radeon 8500DV is very underclocked and is not a gaming card in any way.

That icon orginally came for "Sam and Max" if memory serves. Something of an inside joke now; they put it in all their games.
