Yeah I was wondering if you bitset the DL media to DVD-ROM it might be more playable. I thought Kprobes didn't do DL media accurately yet? The one speed test over at CDRinfo looked good. He identified one drive as a BenQ.

I've gotten it to scan pressed DL media... the early KP2 betas had problems, but I think it's resolved now.

It's a good question. My post was more along the lines of "well, it actually scans now, which is a huge improvement over it just sitting there doing nothing in the betas" ;) In any case, the scans do seem to make sense.

Note that KProbe doesn't really do anything. It just asks the onboard chip for an error count and gives that to the user. It's just the messenger. So any accuracy issues should be pegged on whether or not the chipset is able to detect errors properly. As the chipset needs to be able to detect correctable PI and correctable PO errors so that it could correct them, I would guess that the chipset's readings should be fairly reliable, or otherwise, the drive will be unable to read the disc very well.

Well, reliable to that specific drive perhaps.... also, what exactly do the error levels mean? LiteON drives are much more error tolerant then some other DVD players.

I take it that these are review samples? Any idea when consumers can buy them? I'm itching to buy one. ;)

June should be the month they start becoming available to retail locations. I have no idea which retail locations will put them up for sale, or the price. This is from my friends at Maxell Canada

Hey, another month is good... there still aren't any actual dual layer drives on the market you know

I know, I know. And the first generation of DL will be bad and should be avoided. And the media will be expensive and probably not worth it. But... it's fun to have something new and shiny in one's hands. ;) Besides, with all the 832S overclock from 812S rumors being spread by OC-Freak... you'd almost say that it's already on the market. ;)

Hrm, I'm looking forward to all the "my 812S@832S failed on me" rumours

As for me, I'm going out an *BUYING* a *REAL* LiteON 832s drive when they hit the market. I can't afford to be messing around with stuff like that when I've got to get testing on the media done. Why throw extra variables into an equation that is already far too complicated?

Yeah...

coming back to what rex said about getting one, does ANYONE have an idea on how much the DRU-700A/SOHC-832S is going to cost? I'd be interested in it as a drive for just DL.

According to my retail contacts, it will be consistant with "the next model up" pricing that you currently see. So I would expect about $165-$215 $CDN or somewhere like that... maybe cheaper?

Not bad, of course, I wouldn't mind like $150, heh. I'm sure after a few weeks newegg will have the SOHC-832S OEM for like $150-$160.
