LG GCE-8520B Performance Advice Needed..

Postby monza on Thu Mar 20, 2003 3:30 pm

Need some kind of comparison. I just purchased an LG GCE-8520B 52X
seems to work fine ,But I can only burn mp3 at 32X . anything faster
and the buffer underrun kicks in. Is this normal ? I have never had a
burner this fast before . File backup seems to work at higher speeds.

Thanks

Do you have DMA enabled properly?

Are you burning mp3 to a data disc or a CD audio disc? What is CPU usage like during the burn? If you are converting the mp3 to CDA format on the fly so that you can burn a regular CD audio disc, your system might be having trouble converting at a fast enough rate.

What are your system specifications?

What media are you burning to?

I am burning mp3 to a CD audio disc and converting the mp3 to CDA format on the fly . My Dma is enabled correctly but I was unsure about what to speeds to expect from a 52X burner & a Celeron Chip

System is a Celeron 1.7ghz
256mb Ram
WinXP Pro SP1

Thanks

It may be that you are asking too much of your processor. What is the CPU usage while you are burning?

Only about 14- 37 %. The new Celeron seems to be quite good.

But you have no problems with buffer underruns when burning the exact same media with a disc full of simple data files (e.g. Word documents, program backups, etc.)? It only happens when burning mp3 to CDA? If so, you might want to try converting your .mp3 files to .wav files before burning, and burn from the .wav files. If you don't already have a program you like to use for converting mp3 to wav, you can download the nice free program CDex at http://www.cdex.n3.net/ .

I bought an LG GCE-8520B writer few days ago. I burned a Philips 48x at 40x speed. Then I made a surface test with Nero Cd Speed. It showed many yellow square at the end of the cd. About 5% of the whole cd. Then I put the same cd into my old Asus cd-rom (40x) and the test showed cca. 10% yellow part. It is the same situation when I write at 32* speed, but there are a less damaged areas. So, my question is: Is it normal? Do this other cd writers too?

I had the the LG GCE-8520b for a week and i have not had a problem burning mp3s at 48x or 40x disks,
i have
766mhz celeron
192mb ram
intel 82810e chipset
LG GCE-8520b with latest firmware 1.04

Sometimes you get errors because of the brand of disk you are using not the burner, try using higher quality disks 8)

Gecco,
Try to update your firmware to 1.04. I was having problems like that with firmware 1.0 but they were all gone with 1.04,
The only problem i had till now (with 1.04) was with Nashua/CMC 40x cdrs. And even with those burned @40x i only had 0.44% damaged on the cd.
The bear is waiting...
