the LG drive is rather strict.
it will only burn at the speed it (LG engineers) think the burn will be a good one. so often (on various brands of media) the drive will burn at a lower speed than the rated speed.

perhaps a firmware upgrade will help improve media compatibility, let you burn at 8x instead of 4x.

I just discovered the same problem. I ordered a 100 pack of 8x Ritek G05 and Nero 6 (and DVD Decryptor) says it can only be written to at 4x. Not only that, but it looks as if a generic write strategy was used as the Disk Quality Test off Nero CD Speed was HORRIBLE. I'm kinda pissed off, it's as if G05 isn't even in LG's latest A111 firmware :evil:

It seems others are having the same problem... Common LG, we need a firmware update pronto!

A little update. Memorex 8x DVD+R (CMC) works like a charm at its rated speed. I wonder what excuse LG has for not accepting Ritek's G05?

sadly, LG burners dun really adore Ritek media.
LG4120B A102,A104,A111 burns g05@4x only
LG4160B also burns at 4x only. :-?

well bunrs at 4x with my memorex -r 8x media were junk....got them cheap at 70 cents each here in Canada (50)...will not burn any more with A104...will stay with my 4x media and under...all works ok this way.

Guess LG is boffo for now with 8x media...enver an issue with 4x.

I read in another forum you should never burn at the "advertised max speed" anyway as writer will be picky about media.

oh well.....maybe new firmware needed.

you don't need to change your burner :-?

the 4120b is fine with just 4x now....I have used 6 diff media types at 4x...all ok...you will have to wait for LG to fix up 8x burning though for -r

How about getting teh Benq 1620 that is all the rage there now...I may get one to replace my LG combo writer/DVD ROM

don't use crap discs!!

Verbatim 8x +R -> work at 12x
Taiyo Yuden 8x +R -> work at 12x
Ricoh 8x +R -> work at 12x
Verbatim 8x -R -> work at 8x
Taiyo Yuden 8x -R -> work at 8x
...

If you look at some plextor 712 scans, you'll see that most writers claim to work at 8x on crap discs, but in reality, have bad write quality then.
I wonder what excuse LG has for not accepting Ritek's G05?
Too much difference in quality between different Ritek G05 discs to assure proper 8x writing

If you look at the cdrinfo reviews of the LG 4120B and 4160B, then you'll see that they have better write quality on many disc types, compared to other drives. Because LG only allows high speed on media which work with high speeds!

I'm not going to buy that. There is probably more 8x G05 DVD-R out in the world than any other 8x DVD-R dye (maybe CMC has more shit out but I dunno). If LG is gonna sell us a 12x burner, they should let US, the consumer, decide wether we want to write fast or not. If they purposly are refusing to let us write at 8x on G05, then I'm getting a new burner... that is just a bunch of crap :evil:

Yeah, you are right. Having discs being burnt properly is outdated, we all want 16x coasters :)

Ahh, the sarcasm flows like wine around here. I'm not saying that optical drive makers should let us burn 1x media at 16x, I'm saying that if my damn disks says it can be written to at 8x (even if I would get a crappy result), I should be able to write the damn thing at 8x. And, I mean, its freakin' Ritek, one of the largest CD/DVD recordable makers in the biz. WTF is all I have to say about that :wink:

Yes, exactly. It is only Ritek.

Ah, so you want to make crappy discs. Well, LG won't let you write discs at crappy quality.... what is all that Ritek zealotry about? That is almost as bad as Princo users! You are just blaming LG instead of Ritek because it's your beloved Ritek and you'd get a nervous breakdown rather than blaming them for making inconsistent discs...

What? I can't believe someone could get so hot and bothered about DVD media allegiance. You need to get laid, man :P Could you point to any other 8x (or higher) burner on the market that won't write to G05 correctly? LG messed up, and all they need to do is simpily issue firmware A112 and all will be well...

Judging from the latest tests in the C'T, the only drives that are able to write Ritek G05 at 8x are NEC 3500 and Pioneer A08

Not at all. Why should they waste their time by making Ritek G05 @ 8x work? The LG 4120B can already produce much better burns than the Plextor PX712 on the media I have listed above, and LG should continue to do exactly that instead of wasting time for stuff like that (the Pioneer A08 is yet better than the LG drive though)

Did you also use Princo discs when Princo 2x were the most common "2x" media on the market? Did you also blame drives instead of the crap media for not writing it at 2x? I guess so, because that's your only reason to use Ritek and then to blame LG... if someone wants to send me such media, I can test the write quality on a Plextor 712 #-o

Wow! I should have been paying more attention to this thread! LOL

I for one wish more manufacturers would be like LG and pay more attention to writing quality then following the crowd of other manufactures. I'm sick and tired of drive makers selling products which push discs WAY beyond their specs, and way beyond their tolerances, and create a situation where data is no longer being stored in a way that we can expect to be able to retreive it later when we need it. I've heard a lot of complaints about LG DVD burners... but they almost always come down to the basic "it's not as fast as other drives" issue. If you want a really fast drive, get the NEC 3500 and hack the firmware. Or get the DVR-108 and use the nx4all firmware, and you can create 16x coasters on any media you like! :D

Let me give an example of drive support done properly :wink: I picked up some Acer 4x DVD+Rs recently. These discs had the "DVD+R 8x" written in the mirror band of the disc, and had a "NANYA RJB" code as a MID. So I popped one in my BenQ DW1620, and it immediatly recognized the disc as 16x compatible!! (not bad for a 4x DVD+R eh?). So I burned it using Nero CD/DVD's Data Discs Creation utilility, and what speed did it burn at? 4x, and not a second faster! Why? because the disc couldn't handle it. Most likely, it was a "downgrade" 8x DVD+R made by Nanya, which are often sold off as cheap 4x media instead of as 'B Grade' discs (who else do we know who does this? it starts with an 'R'). Anyways, long story short, the burn was well done. The WOPC function in the BenQ drive made the right call, and the burn was pretty decent. The jitter/beta scores were not what I would have liked (below -5% beta!!) but the disc is ok on my PC DVD drives. At a faster speed, the disc probably would have failed with high jitter/beta errors (which supports my 'B Grade 8x DVD+R theory). My friend's Plextor 708a however could only produce coasters on these discs, because they were burned too fast!

Now, Why I traded Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+Rs for a spindle of 'B Grade' Nanya DVD+Rs that I already knew were coasters in waiting, I'll leave to your imaginations :wink:
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Hmm... this I did not know. Bleh, maybe Ritek is at fault here. I'm not saying I hate my LG, by the way. I was just under the impression that they were being lazy with G05. I don't think I'll be getting rid of that drive any time soon purely for the 5x DVD-RAM support alone.

P.S.
I have never used Princo crap, and I am fully aware of the strife it has caused to many people. Ahh, back in the day when Verbatim was the only decent disk around :-k
