help with deciding to get my 1st DVD burner

Postby gomcse on Tue Aug 03, 2004 11:42 pm

Hi guys

I am planning to get my 1st DVD burner and install it onto my P4 PC with XP.
I have ruled down a few choices:

1. BenQ DW1600A
2. NEC ND3500A
3. Lite On SOHW-832S

My wish list is a DVD burner comes with 8MB cache, supports DUAL Layer, DVD+, DVD-R, Mount rainer format, with 40X CD Speed and 16X DVD read speed. May be I am too greedy but so far I didn't come across any DVD writer come with all the features I am asking for.

So I need your advise. Please kindly shed some light for me

well 8mb cache is disputed to be useless, i would agree that its like a difference of a second more if your buffer drops

Hello!

It doesn´t matter if the drive have 2MB or 8MB Cache, looking at the writing-quality is more important.

The Liteon is not to recommend, the NEC 3500 isn´t tested/avaible this time, the Benq 1600 doesn´t support DVD-R/RW this time. Maybe with new FW it can write to - but i remember that the - Support in the past was very bad.

If you want the Benq or NEC, you should wait til a review from Ian is coming.
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Hello Scour

Thanks for your comments but if Lite-On, NEC and BenQ are not, what brand names should I get then ?

I don't think I will spend a fortune on the Plextor or Sony DVD burner.

you always can't go wrong with a pioneer dvr-107 or maybe get the new dvr-108

When using the right media (not Princo!), the LG 4120B is also worth a look, but only a look. LG should implement bitsetting before more people are buying the drive :o

At this point I would recommend the NEC 2500a or Pioneer DVR-107. The BenQ 1600a *will* get DVD-R support added (free upgrade to 1620a) but that doesn't mean it will be good, as already stated.

I'm sorry to say that the Pioneer A08 does not seem a good choice at this point... I've seen some of the results, and it has a number of problems with media support at this time, not to mention is much slower then other 12x drives due to the whole Z-CLV vs. P-CAV writing strategy thing.

Plextor 708A

The Plextor 708A is worth every penny: Absolutely no problems in burning DVDs & CDs. I use cheapo Ritek with Ultra Nero 6 and am quite happy with the results!

I suppose if you stick to Ritek it'll be fine... but what happens when the G04 discs that work with the 708a run out? they aren't being made any more you know :o do the G05 discs work as well? they seem to be of inferior quality everywhere else, and I doubt the 708a has a writing strategy for the M02 since it's so new :o

8x dvd-r discs are not really compatible to older drives. Although firmware 1.05 claims to work with them, the result on Verbatim 8x -R was crap with firmware 1.07 when I were still using the Plextor 708.

I have an 851SX Litey and have not experienced any problems burning movies in the +R/RW. I did experienced some with -R when burning movies. I've burned music using inexpensive media and no problems. As far as the 8MB cache, I don't think it matters much, at least I've not experienced any problems.

I'm sure that there are DVDs that are better than LiteOn, but then some cost more and FW upgrades are slow. Just make sure that what you buy meets your burning needs, price, and take it from there. There is no one DVD burner that is perfect. Good Luck.

I believe they are getting good - writing results with the benQ DW822A. If you live in the USA stick with + since you can get it for the same price as quality - 50 cents a disk. Go BenQ wait a week and the DW1620 will probably be out and it will come with both format support and it has a better reader then the NEC unless they have made some improvements. The NEC with 4x DL support may be worth considering too. The BenQ does well with 16x write something alot of others don't do well past 4x. + with bitsetting is the way to go... its the most compatiable.

I recommend a Pioneer DVR 107 or A07, a LG GSA 4082/4120 or the NEC 2510.

If you use mostly DVD-R, the Pioneer is the best ot these 3 writers.
