High-Def Market Share By Studio

Postby Ian on Tue Jan 08, 2008 1:44 pm

AV Watch posted some pictures from the BDA's presentation at CES. One of the more interesting ones was the high-def market share, broken down by studio.

DreamWorks studios is not listed (unless they're part of the Paramount slice). If Paramount switches to BluRay that will give them 80.9% of the market. I thought that "other" might be regular DVD sales or it could mean other formats such as the China HD format.

'Other' is almost certainly non hi-def committed independant studios.

I was at this press conference. Dreamworks is included in the Paramount slice, since they are distributed by Paramount. The 'Other' category is unknown data from minor studios. This category also includes some Blu-ray exclusive studios, such as Starz Home Entertainment. That is why they used the number 70% (instead of 68.4%, which the slide says).

I wonder how they figured out Warners share? Total sales before BD exclusivity? Either way those number look a little distorted, as HD-DVD had ~40% of the market. Short term anyway, Warners share will decrease as the HD-DVD exclusive consumers aren't immediately going to run out and buy BD players.

40% no way.
Maybe in america.
1:5 for Japan.
1:3 For europe !
And that's movies. Looking at hardware suggests HD-DVD has less then 10% of the markt (counting the PS3 as a blu ray playes as is correct because the HD-DVD group does count it when it comes to attach rates :D )

Look at the slide title. This is Studio Market share based on available DVD content. It shows that 70% of all the current available content can be released exclusively to Blu-ray Disc.

I think the subject line of this whole thread is a little inaccurate.
The chart clearly states "Market share by DVD sales".
Note : not HD/Blue sales.

And that makes sense.
You can treat this as "content market share", which could potentially be published on either HDDVD or BluRay, depending on a studio.
Am I right ??

UPDATE: oops, Wesociety just posted basically the same thing right before me :)

OK, if they're using DVD figures that could become BD's or HD's, it makes sense.
As for the 40% sales to date, I think your right, world wide that number is more like 25-33%.
