In House Review - ASUS SBW-06C1S-U Portable 6x BD Writer

Postby Ian on Tue Jan 25, 2011 9:48 pm

Today, CDRLabs brings you a review of ASUS's new external slim Blu-ray Disc writer, the SBW-06C1S-U. This stylish and compact drive is capable of 6x BD-R, 4x BD-R DL and 2x BD-RE writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 6x. The SBW-06C1S-U is also backwards compatible with all major CD and DVD formats and is designed to be powered completely off a computer's USB bus. Without the need for an AC power source, you can watch a Blu-ray movie or burn a disc wherever you go.

I really had high hopes for this drive. The SBW-06C1S-U seems to be based on the same drive design as the Sony BDX-S500U but unlike that drive, its USB powered. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the engineers at ASUS did a lot of testing because the USB/SATA bridge in this thing doesn't appear to be able to handle 6x BD read and write speeds. This is also an issue with ASUS's 6x BD combo drive so its not an isolated problem or something with firmware, etc. Anyway, I just wanted to comment a bit on this. Enjoy the review.
