Lite-On or Memorex?

Postby jimbo on Mon Feb 24, 2003 3:27 pm

I am looking to buy either the Memorex 52x24x52 or the Lite-On LTR52246S. (In Black)
I can pick up the Memorex at Best Buy for $75.00 or the Lite-On from Newegg for $60.00.
The $15.00 difference is no big deal, but are there any other differences?
I noticed the Memorex advertises it uses Just-Burn buffer underun error protection. Is this the same as the Lite-On?
Are they identical, or is there a firmware difference that give either one an advantage?

Thanks in advance,

JIM

The Memorex is a LiteOn that has a Memorex label on it. They are the same drives. Even the firmware (when compared at the same revision level) is identical with the exception of the identifier string. And, if you like, you can easily flash back and forth between Memorex and LiteOn firmware versions. The advantage to using LiteOn firmware versions is that they are released more frequently, so if you have some media that doesn't work so well with an older firmware there is a greater chance that you will find a fix in a newly released LiteOn firmware that isn't available in a Memorex version.

Is Fry's a West coast chain? I've never seen one on the East coast, but from all the deals I keep hearing they have, I wish there was one in Northern VA.
