LiteOn LTD-811S is a dual format,dual layer burner?

HI guys,
I read an interesting article on the LiteOn LDW-811S DVD burner.
I will paste the article below:-

"The LDW-811S is the latest dual-format DVD-Writer from LiteOn.
We couldn't carry out the tests on DVD-RW media,as they aren't
available in the market yet;we tested with 2.4X media.The assorted media
write test took 21 minutes and the single data file write test took 23 minutes.
In the DVD-R data writing tests,the drive took 55 minutes to write 4.5 GB of assorted data.
The DVD+R/RW consortium have fixed a standard for dual-layered DVD+R media for public consumption.The DVD-R consortium have also arrived at a standard for dual layered DVD media and these should be available worldwide by around May-June 2004.Now that theses standards have been fixed purchasing an 8X DVD burner makes sense.
The LDW-811S can't write on dual-layered media,but according to the drive manufacturers,this can be taken care of by a firmware upgrade.This drive is a good purchase,since it's priced at an affordable Rs.13,750/-."

So guys I would like to know what you all think about this article.This article was published in the Test Drive-Reviews section of a leading "technology" magazine here in India,who calls itself "Your Technology Navigator".
Also 1 US $=46 Indian Rs.(Rupees),which makes it about 298 US$.Thats too costly when compared with American prices.

Yeah, I read the Digit review yesterday too. Dunno about the dual-layer stuff,everything else works just fine, including the -R/+R burning.

Hi.I dont think that dual layer support can be added by a firmware update.I also didn't knew that DVD consortium has arrived successfully at a standard.

1)Dunno about the dual-layer stuff, I'll be happy if it happens for the 811S. If it doesn't DVDShrink is your friend

2)I didn't get an 811S per se, but a 401S and modded it to an 811S by Zebra's mod V3 and V4.I paid Rs 7500 for it,box pack,1 year warranty, from Mediatech in Mumbai. Their phone number is 022-26361111

3)MEdia: I use Imation 4X +R discs, which are RICOHJPN01 and the 4X +RW disc which came with the drive.They are about 125 each for a pack of 10. Also got some Japanese Imation 2X DVD-R discs, 75 each for a pack of 10.The Imations burn just fine at 8X in the 811S. I've posted some tests in the CDFreaks DVD Media Test FOrum.

I think the chances of the LDW-811s burning dual layered media is so small it's not even worth calculating. The problem with power usage alone makes it very unlikely.

Put another way, if the drive is ever modded to handle dual layer burning, it probably will not last more then a couple of burns.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. AFAIK,30mW of laser power is required at 8X,right? What would the wattage required for dual-layer be around?

I would not dismiss the possibility of enabling any 8X dvd writer being able to write to dual layer discs via simple firmware upgrade. After all Pioneer started demoing their dual layer technology using an off the shelf A06 drive whose only modification was a firmware update. Granted it recorded at only 2.4X, it still did so to a dual layer disc. So it probably in the realm of possibilities.

Pioneer has also said that the A06 used for the dual-layer demo had more than just the firmware modified:

German computer mag c't recently reported in their print editing that the dual layer DVD-R burner shown at CES was in fact not an A06 with only a firmware upgrade, but that the hardware was modified as well. And Pioneer said that neither the A06 nor A07 could be upgraded to dual layer burning capabilities and that only the A09, due for Christmas 2004 would add dual layer DVD-R support, at 1x speed. In the meantime, there will be an A08 burner that burns DVD-Rs at 12x or 16x (the specs are not yet known), since the A09 will handle single layer DVD-Rs at 16x speed.

They said and the picture showed it was a Pioneer A06, we have no confirmation whatsoever that the actual guts of the drive are the same as an off the shelf A06.

I've got a dual-format burner, have burned over 250 discs, and all but 2 of them were DVD+R. I won't be buying -R's anytime soon (read: ever).

I believe Pioneer's DVD-R dual layer burning is slated to be at 2x, which is not much slower then 2.4x, although over a large disc i suppose can make quite a difference.

For an 8.5GB disc, roughly:

1x: 1 hr. 42 min.
2x: 51 min.
2.4x: 42 min.

Those are just rough estimates though.

2x would be better than 1x, but according to Doom9's quote it's 1x.

I don't really, care though: I'll never buy a Pioneer drive.

Yeah guys....I thought the same.Because for the dual layered burner you need a higher power supply and some hardware modifications.
I dont think that LiteOn will add dual layer support to the 811S.
