The drive isn't reading anything now? If so, try uninstalling the IDE channel to which it is attached in Device Manager and reboot the computer. This will re-install the driver, which may help.
Another thing to try is to boot from a bootable floppy disk in DOS and see if you can read a disc that way. You can find programs to make bootable DOS floppy disks with optical drive drivers at http://www.bootdisk.com
