MSI CR52-A2 Quickie Preview

Postby Ian on Wed Feb 26, 2003 9:19 pm

I've been playing around with MSI's new 52/24/52 CD-RW. Since there's been little info on these Optorite based drives, I figured I'd post some screenshots.

Image

Yep, the drive supports Sanyo's BURN-Proof. Take note that it doesn't support Mt. Rainier. I was a little surprised by this. MSI had assured me that the CR52-A2 would support this feature. Maybe they'll add it later.

Image

Pretty good average writing speed. I haven't done any actual writing tests (yet) so I don't know how the speeds, media compatibility or quality is.

Image

This really surprised me. Instead of using CAV or P-CAV, the drive uses CLV!!

Is that with a rewritable ? The other curve starts at 24x, so it makes sense to stay with 24x if its feasible at the start of the disc.

Hello!

Ian, do you make a complete review of this writer?

It seem again to be a Cyberdrive, look at the FW.

The MSI from Benq have other FW lieke a.tz or so
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Scour: Ian never said the drive was based on a BenQ model. In fact, he said it's based on an Optorite model, and he is correct. 150D is an Optorite firmware version.

You questioned whether Ian properly reviewed the drive, and you also stated that the drive seemed to be made by Cyberdrive. It is not. It is made by Optorite. You can tell because the MSI/Optorite drive uses BURN-Proof technology while the Cyberdrive CW099D uses Super Link. Furthermore, the Cyberdrive CW099D supports Mount Rainier out of the box whereas the MSI/Oprorite does not.

Hello!

No, the Cyberdrive CW099D supports MR only with newer FW, not with the first FW 100D

In Germany Optorite is not on the sale, i don´t know this drives
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

Then the buffer underrun technology is a giveaway that the MSI 52X24X52 burner is an Optorite.

The drive is based on the Optorite 5205.

A review of this drive is coming. However, i have a few other projects i need to finish up first.
