Need help choosing a DVD burner....

Postby Chad T on Mon Nov 29, 2004 8:31 pm

My computer is getting kinda old...it's a Dell PIII 600mhz with 128MB RAM and a 13.3GB hard drive. Believe it or not, I have never owned even a CD burner. I have decided to purchase one and started looking at prices. Considering a DVD burner can be had for a few bucks more, it appears it would be wise to go ahead and get a DVD burner since apparently most of those will burn CDs as well.

Anyway, I want something less than $150....would actually prefer less than $100 if possible. Preferably internal, but would consider external. I'm not sure how much I'll use it at this point, so speed really isn't nearly as important (though I don't want a "turtle" either) to me as reliability is. Basically, I want something that will reliably burn and play both CDs and DVDs on my somewhat aging computer. Also, I don't have any burning software so it would be nice to get a retail boxed unit with a nice host of software.

I tried to think of all things that might help you make a recommendation, but if you need more info, let me know. Thanks!

P.S. If you could also recommend a brand/model of media that would work well with your recommended drive, that would be great too.

Before you do anything I would reccomend you upgrade your hard drive and increase your ram. At least 40gb HD and 256ram. Your computer is old enough that I would recomend looking for a new computer (Sorry....). You can get a decent emachines on sale for about $500.

I own an NEC 3500 (very popular)and I love it. They can be had for aprox $75.00. The other hot drive that everyone in taking about is the Benq 1620 which can be had for around $70.00.

Benq DW1620 is about 67$ @ the Egg for the OEM version. Pair it up with some 8X +R Taiyo Yuden media from Rima.com and get 16X burning bliss.
