well, two basic questions are:
what version of Windows are you running?
how are you connecting the drive to the computer?

if it's going to be connected internally (motherboard IDE channel), you don't need any driver.
just hook it up, make sure jumpers are set correctly, and Windows will recognize and install the drive automatically!

Well as stated above I am running Windows 98SE. Since my brother was doing the installing for me, I will have to wait for him to jump in to answer your second question. I know that Windows did not recognize my 106, that's why we were looking for drivers.

I'm a little worried that since I tried some drivers and they didn't work whether it will cause any problems or not.

Thanks for the reply, hopefully my brother will see this and respond as I sure would like to be able to try this out.

Ok,,,this is "the "brother........Mike is using Windows 98SE. I installed the 106D as a slave to his CD burner on the secondary IDE slot. The CD burner is the master. His harddrive is on the Primary IDE slot, with another older CD rom drive as the slave to it. When we rebooted the computer,,I was expecting "windows" to come up with "new device" but nothing appeared. When going into device manager you could see the 106D was there(in picture anyway)but didnt appear to be working when we tried it. We did put in the "nero" disc that came with it, and I was surprised to see it play in the drive. So, we went to "autoshrinkISO", to see how it worked. It wouldnt let me select the drive(letter)where the 106D was located. First it did start to recognize the drive, but then an error message appeared(and right now, Icant remember what it was, as I am 15 miles away at my home). I'll ask Mike to try it again, and copy down what error message he receives. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I had him go ahead and download the last driver in the above group,,but he said it made no differance, and now he's concerned the driver he downloaded will cause him problems.
thanks,

OK.

first of all, is the drive recognized in BIOS?

make sure all channels (Primary + Secondary, Master + Slave) are set to Auto in BIOS and BIOS recognizes the drives.

second, verify correct jumper settings.

if things still don't work well (windows doesn't recognize the drive correctly after rebooting), a few more suggestions:

start playing around with various IDE settings.
e.g. switch around the CD burner and DVD burner (CD burner Slave, DVD burner Master).

if this doesn't help, try replacing IDE cable.

hopefully one of these things will help.

if BIOS doesn't recognize the drive it might be worthwhile to update to the latest motherboard firmware.

(it might be worth trying that even if BIOS does recognize the drive but Windows is giving trouble ???)

anyway, i guess BIOS/firmware flashing should be kept to a last resort option, try other things first.
