TDK has 2MB buffer, but also features buffer under run proof technology and lossless linking on +RW. I do not know about Sony's incompatibilities, but with my experience, the media burned by sony was not read back properly by other drives, although the sony itself read it's burn perfectly.

So far my 166s reads the disks from my 500a just fine. My Cyberhome 500 and Haier hd700 read all the movies in both formats fine too as long as it was done in the proper formats and like that.
I've only made 3 bad DVD disks so far and I'm pretty sure it was a conflict between burn programs. It doesn't always do top speed but they seem to work and it does clean cd burns on my old TDK certified + media and normal media as well.
I'd say any of those drives should be fine for you, it all comes down to price and personal prefence as much as anything.

i read yer review chubz9 and currently its swaing me towards the tdk but at the same time after a friend suggested the sony oem dw-u10a... coz it has a faster cdr burning speed compared to the tdk one... but its oem tho.. i wonder if it will have problems?.. or is it solely based on media thats used?
