My point is that if retailers are releasing the product in the channel already (even unintended), seems to me that Ahead should take care of exisitng customers since its already out there.
Bumping up release dates due to channel issues is something I've done before. You can still have the official launch, releasing ahead of time to upgrade customers won't take away from it or minimize the impact of the launch unless you are worried about the quality of the product. Although, based on the 2 previews I've read, that doesn't seem to be an issue.
If anything, releasing the upgrade to existing customers is a good thing because it not only makes them feel privileged for owning the previous product and getting it ahead of "new" customers, but it also serves as a good way to elicit feedback on the product and potentially address any issues (yes it does mean that we are guinea pigs) before the product has been fully launched.
