News of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Drives

Hey all,

I just bought an Asus DVD E616-P drive, and it seems that it can't boot any bootable cd on startup.

My config is this:

Primary Master - Western Digital HD
Primary Slave - Asus DVD E616-P
Secondery Master - Lite-On CD-RW x52

The weird thing is that when I configure the Lite-On as my Primary slave it can boot properly.
The DVD just hangs for a while when searching for a bootable CD ...

Please Help!!!!
I have Samsung DVD Rom 616Q Firmware F403, I updtd it to E403 using a Samsung utility, Discinfo shows No Lock detected, Nero Info tools shows No Lock, No region lock, when I insert an orginal DVD Grease locked at region 1, the above things show region lock detected. Does this mean that I have only four more region locks to go before I get locked with the last region? Does this mean ...

Here's a good question. Is it possible to boot up my pc using a dvd data disk? Say for example: I burn Win XP to a dvd disk and set my dvd rom as the first boot drive. Does anyone have experience with this?

What DVD-rom would you choose?

My wishes are:

* readability of DVD-R +R -RW +RW (DVD-RAM i dont care) at full speed!
* Speed .. i want to rip fast
* good errorcorrection if a damaged dvd is inserted


Bonus features (not that important):

* reading of copyprotections

How many kilobytes per second is 1x DVD? Tried a quick google but couldn't find anything concrete. I have a Creative PC-DVD ROM which claims to be equivalent to a 20x CD-ROM. It's a 2x DVD-ROM drive, so I assume 1x DVD is about equivalent in read speed to a 10x CD-ROM, which makes it 1500kB/s. Am I right?

Odd problem: when I eject a movie from my NEC 1300a drive it still shows up as in the drive. I can put another movie in and the drive still says it has the first movie. When using DVD X Copy Xpress it reads the movie, then keeps asking for a blank disk after I put one in because it thinks the original is still in the drive. Any ideas on how to fix this? ...

I recently got a tdk indi dvd 440bxn and i'm having problems burning my dvd backups. I have used easy's "drag'n drop" and Veritas with sony DRU-510A and they have no trouble burning the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders that have the compressed VOB, IFO and BUP files from the decrypted and compressed DVD (DVD decrypter, DVD2one).

The one made from the DRU-510A played on my PS2 and panasonic DVD player, but the ones I made ...

If you were to buy a CD-ROM what would be your choice. Something with good if not excellent DAE, something thats fast, ok something thats quiet but thats not a must.
